Shake your limbs to relax yourself. Settle down with your spine straight and take our time taking three breaths with your surroundings, then allow your mind to linger on the words: earth, air, fire, water.
Earth. You have imagined the earth beneath your feet. Now think of the many manifestations of earth on the planet. Feel your feet on the earth of your choice… marshland, desert, forest, mountains, hills and valleys, sandstone, granite, chalk. Feel, with the pressure of your feet against the earth, the pull of gravity, keeping you anchored. Feel the current of energy from the earth throbbing upwards. You are a creature of earth. Relax into this feeling, and then open your awareness out and find yourself in a high place…
Air. Feel the air as a tangible presence as you gaze out to the vast horizon, laid out below the huge arching dome of the azure sky. In this high place, your awareness expands: the great winds of the earth, swirling round, think and pure, sharpen your wits and blow the cobwebs away. You breathe in air that sparkles like wine and are intoxicated, feeling yourself light and buoyant, You extend your arms above you as if you could float on the thermals that support the birds in their flight, feeling at one with the wind that carries messages all over the world. Stand firm, as your awareness is pulled high into the sky…
Fire. High in the vast expanse of blue, feel the blaze of the sun, striking down, warming the thin grass and bursting the buds of the alpine flowers, drying up the atmosphere. With your eyes shut, stretch in an attitude of ecstasy, fed by the warmth that pours down in golden rays. The water is pulled up into the upper atmosphere and you open your eyes to see a large cloud on the horizon. Watch it travelling with speed, and whilst it is in the middle distance in that huge vista, you see it disgorging its rain as a hazy mist over the landscape…
Water. In your imagination, see the rain from that cloud sinking into the soil, percolating through the ground to a deep subterranean spring that makes its gradual way to the surface. There is a tiny trickle of crystal water emerging from the ground, and you see it in your mind’s eye gaining strength as it tumbles downhill, changing eventually from stream to river, and making its way to join the massive depth of the sea.
Allow the scene to fade as you come back to everyday reality. Stretch, yawn, and wriggle to feel fully back in the present here and now.
Quite a number of things, Anon! Of course, keep in mind that your local laws may vary on the legality of collecting rain water. Always be cautious and look up your city and state laws regarding this. Also, be careful about ingesting rain water unless you’re confident on how to properly filter and purify it.
COLLECTING RAIN WATER
Rain collected during a gentle rain fall is said to inspire peace and serenity, and is useful in calming and tranquility spells.
Rain collected during a storm is said to carry the energy of the storm – powerful, ferocious, energetic. Use storm water for empowering spells.
Add hot sauce, capsaicin or extremely hot crushed peppers (with caution) to storm water to get fire water, useful for warding and curses.
Rain collected during a wind storm, such as a hurricane or tornado, is said to help with letting go and moving forward. That being said, collect with caution and never put yourself in danger to do so.
Rain or hail collected from a hail storm can be used for destructive purposes, for warding against and eliminating psychic attacks or creating them.
Collect water off of a gravestone to create spirit water, useful for spells involving spirits and ancestors. Caution: Preferably collect this from a friend or family member who was comfortable with your witchcraft, or a spirit who has agreed to this. Always return the favor with an offering.
Rain collected off of a flower tends to carry the trait of that flower.
Rain collected from a dirt ground can be used for grounding.
Rain collected from a crossroads can be used for choosing a direction.
Rain collected from a liminal space can be used for astral travel (crossing the hedge/venturing into the Other).
Rain collected during a full moon is purified water or empowered with the moonlight.
Rain collected on sabbats are useful for those sabbats’ intents (eg, Spring Equinox for fertility, May Day for sexuality, Midsummer for sun and fire, Samhain for ancestors and spirits, etc).
General rain water is used for cleansing. Use it to cleanse yourself, your house, your jewelry, your stones (that aren’t water soluble) and more.
UTILIZING RAIN AND STORMS
Rain and storms tend to evoke certain moods in us and are perfect for raising energy for spell work or ritual. Just be cautious if you decide to venture outside, especially if lightning or severe weather is a risk.
Rain has great purifying and cleansing properties. Consider cleansing tools that can’t be damaged by water in the rain, or step out in the rain to cleanse yourself.
Spells that involve letting go or cleansing are appropriate during this time. Consider writing down negative thoughts with a watercolor pencil and set it out during a rain to watch it physically wash away.
For anyone who keeps plants, indoor or outdoor, rain is a great refresher. Particularly for indoor plants, who cleanse our air and home, setting them out for a light rain shower can help cleanse them as well and suck the negativity out of their leaves. Just be careful not to over-water indoor plants with rain water.
CALLING UPON RAIN AND STORMS
Beliefs vary on weather magick. Some witches and pagans believe you can use spells to alter your local weather and some don’t. It’s up to you to make a decision on this belief.
Cast a flint stone or sand behind your back to the west to call forth rain (De Lamiis Libre, 1577)
Splash a besom end in fresh water from a live spring, lake, stream or river. Then use the broom to either “stir the sky” or sprinkle water above your head.
Call upon rain by whistling to rustle wind while pouring water from a pitcher into a bowl.
Use an incense recipe to call upon rain. Some might be available at your local store or you can use a mixture of bracken, fern and heather.
Fling water onto your hearth stone to call upon rain.
Off the top of my head, that’s everything I can think of. Good luck to you, Anon!
Write it on a flammable surface and set it on fire (I favour bay leaves)
Carve it on a candle and let the candle melt (you can pick the candle colour according to the spell/wish)
Carve it on a surface with a pyrograph/something hot or carve it on something and put it close to fire where it can charge up.
Draw it on a firework and set it off.
Draw it at the bottom of a tea light and put the candle back in.
Air:
Draw it on a windchime and hand it up.
Make prayer flags with the sigils on them, or a simple flag that’ll blow in the wind.
Draw it on something light and non-polluting and let it go with a gust on wind.
Draw it on a balloon and pop it.
Draw it on a paper kite and let it go in the wind.
Water:
Draw your sigil on a soluble material and let is dissolve, it’ll also charge the water or draw it at the bottom of your cup and it’ll charge both the water and sigil.
Draw it on something non-soluble like a rock and let it soak or even throw it in the river;
Draw it on yourself when taking a shower and let it wash off.
Draw it on the shore where the water will wash it away.
Earth:
Draw it on something from nature (so as not to pollute) and bury it.
Charge it with a crystal grid/previously charged crystals
Draw it on the earth.
Draw it on the leaf of a plant.
Light;
Place it in the sun or moonlight and let it soak it up.
Draw it with a glow in the dark paint.
Draw it on something that’ll disappear like fog on a mirror, lemon juice, ultraviolet pen and such.
Your own Energy:
Meditate on your sigil by focusing on it while you direct your personal energy into it.
Have it near you or on you during sex or masturbation.
Draw it on yourself and dance, sing, workout.
Have it on or near you during extreme pain or emotional states (anger, joy, sadness, etc.)
Draw it with your blood/drop some blood onto it.
Extras:
Place it on a charging device (phone, computer)
Place it on speakers and blast music that matches the intent
Sing/Play an instrument to it
Draw it on the sole of your shoes
Draw it on/near a grave/with grave dirt/anything symbolic of death
Post it on a website such as tumblr where likes charge it and reblogs cast it.
Draw it on paper and tear it up
If you have your own way of charging sigils, do tell me, I am curious, and I’d like to add to the list, since this is in no way the only ways of doing so.
