So maybe you’re a college witch with limited space and money, limited to the one window in your dorm. Or, maybe you’re a witch without extensive backyard space who wants to start up a magical garden. Perhaps you’re a kitchen witch who wants the freshest herbs right at her fingertips.
For many witches, having a garden seems to be a bit of a no-brainer. After all, plants and magic go hand-in-hand. Plus, when thinking of a witch, it’s hard not to think of a cottage in the woods with a little vegetable garden out front. Unfortunately for the majority of us, our cottage in the woods is a tiny flat, and our garden out front is a windowsill with limited space.
This is when it comes time to embrace your craftiness and bring your garden indoors! Not only does it place your garden in a convenient location, it also allows you to freshen the air, recycle what would otherwise harm the earth, and embrace your witchy green thumb!
Gardening for Your Familiar
This past weekend, I went to one of my coven sisters’ place to run a game of Dungeons and Dragons. This in itself isn’t that unusual – I usually play about a game a week, and every other week is held at her place. However, she is definitely a witch who spends plenty of time both in the garden and in the kitchen! A fellow animal lover, with three cats and a couple of dogs, it’s always enjoyable to visit. What surprised me, though was an addition to her home’s normal features: a little garden close to the ground meant for her cats!
Whether a college witch or a witch who’d been practicing for a long time, it’s fair to say that many of us – dare I say that perhaps most of us – have dogs, cats, or some other kind of pet. And while there are plenty of spells out there for familiars and pets, it’s rare that I see spells focusing on gardens for them. So of course, my sister’s garden is featured this week, because it is absolutely brilliant!
A simple project, done in the same way you would any container garden, consider growing plants that your furry friends can safely consume. Where the magic comes in is the intent with which you grow your plants and with which you pot them. The example above makes use of cat grass, catnip, mint (which the kitties love to rub up against), cilantro, and parsley.
But let’s take it a step further, as there are plenty of other animals out there!
Aquatic Gardens: Just like with terrestrial pets and plants, live plants can be added to an aquarium with care. Not only do they breathe new life into your fishes’ home, but they help oxygenate the water and depending on the species of plant and fish in the environment, could provide a food source. Sometimes the plant itself is the pet, as in the case of marimo moss balls!
Terrarium Gardens: In the past, I’ve mentioned bottled gardens and terrarium gardens. Whether reptile or amphibian, plants can help provide a more natural surface for climbing, can provide a food source for herbivorous friends, and – as before – help bring more life to the terrarium!
Formicarium Gardens?: Admittedly, not everyone has a colony of ants as a domestic pet. But as with any animal, ants require care and maintenance, and a proper formicarium usually has a larger area for foraging. Though the ants will be healthy with a steady supply of feeder insects and sugars, adding plants will not only make the “outworld” a more aesthetically pleasing environment, but a more diverse one for the colony as well. In addition, ants have been known to tend to plants, harvesting sap and nectars while also keeping the plant nourished and maintained. Take it a step further by adding pitcher plants – a plant that could easily be a pet itself – which not only help control the colony population, but also promote a mutual relationship with ants (the plant offers nectar to the ants from its inactive pitchers, and while it does “eat” ants, the ants will still take care of the pitcher for the sake of the nectar).
Bringing it Outside: Some of us count horses and other outdoor animals as pets. The same principle applies – set aside a box garden specifically to help nourish your friends and bring some joy to the stable. Similarly, if you don’t have any pets, you could set up a garden to encourage wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see beautiful flower gardens for hummingbirds, fruit trees and berry bushes to encourage wild birds to visit, and gardens set off to the side specifically for deer.
What This Brings to a Witch
Part of being a witch or of being pagan is nurturing a relationship with nature. There are many ways of doing this, from adopting an organic lifestyle to assisting in conservation efforts, to even learning how to forage and to recognize various plants. But it goes without saying that pets, plants, and animals can all do much to help us learn about our role in the world. They teach us how to be ourselves, how to live in the moment. Even the ants in a formicarium can teach us about how to naturally be efficient and productive.
This in itself is magical. It’s a natural spell that is meant to enliven the spirit and while it does do quite a bit to make the animals in our lives happy and healthy (even more so when planted and grown with intent), it also turns around and gives us the very same blessing.
Grow your garden, and tend to it and your animal friends with love, and they will teach you far more than you may realize!
2/3 cup granulated sugar (more or less to taste) [love, joy]
🍉
Ice and fresh mint for serving (optional) [communication, energy, healing, love, lust, prosperity, protection, travel]
Instructions: As you follow these instructions, say, “Joy shall come to me. I bind these ingredients to work together and bring me and those who drink it happiness, joy, love, and positivity. May this food be blessed and so it shall be!” Add watermelon to a blender and pulse until well pureed (there should be about 4 cups). Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. In a large pitcher whisk together water, lemon juice, and sugar until sugar has dissolved. Stir in pureed watermelon. Stir in ice and mint if you’d like (alternately add ice and mint directly to individual cups and pour lemonade over). Store in refrigerator or serve and enjoy!
It just occurred to me that if you have a tea infuser like the one pictured above, you could totally use it as a pendulum.
OOOOOOOOOOHHH YOU COULD PUT CORRESPONDING HERBS IN IT LIKE THINGS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH DIVINATION OR YOUR QUESTION
OMG YOU COULD PUT THE QUESTION INSIDE IT
YOU COULD PUT THINGS INSIDE IT YOU COULD PUT THIINNGSSS
THINNNGSSSS
exactly
this could also be used as a way to infuse herbs in your bath without clogging anything up.
I like your style.
I had to create a whole new tag for this post. This is literally the kind of thing I want to compile for a “family witchery” collection. Just, like, easy and daily witchery. *hand flail* Yessss
I’ve had this in my kitchen drawer for years and never thought of this omg!
As much as I love tea, I have got to have my morning cup of coffee. I notice that not a lot of witches talk about the benefits of coffee and all the things you could add to your coffee to help aid you in your magical workings.
Maybe this will inspire your next cup of coffee and make it a more magical experience.

Extra Witch Tip: I like to have a yummy cup of cinnamon apple coffee in the morning when doing my daily devotionals and meditation to help manifest love and raise spiritual vibrations (or energy) and to help ground me ❤
Drink peppermint tea or chew on peppermint leaves when you have a stomach ache
Hold cloves against your gums to numb a tooth ache
Boil parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme and drink them to reduce fever
After cleaning a wound, apply honey to help it heal and keep it from getting infected
Drink catnip and lemon balm tea to calm down after a stressful day
Take 5 grams a night of powdered valerian root to help you sleep and combat depression
Eat garlic to promote digestive health and prevent diarrhea
Dealing with Spirits:
Always leave an offering to house spirits and garden spirits
Only hang bells where you don’t want spirits entering (though there are a few do actually like bells, but they’ve been nothing but positive in my experience)
Clean from the east side of the house, westward
If a fairy ring grows in your garden, wait for the mushrooms to start dying before you pull them out
If you “lost” an heirloom, check your jewelry box, curio cabinet, or the favorite spot your deceased relative liked to keep said object, even if you don’t put it there ever. It may not really be lost.
Always answer the door on Halloween, but don’t let anyone in. (this goes for creepy people too, not just spirits)
Your pet is not crazy. When s/he flips out, reassure them, and be aware that you may not be able to see what they can.
Believe in your own Abilities:
Don’t buy in to the power of persuasion. You may not notice anything supernatural, because there may not be anything supernatural going on.
If you think something happened because you cast a spell, even if you can’t “prove” it, then it happened *at least in part* because you cast a spell. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Sometimes, the only effect a spell has, is to give us enough confidence to deal with whatever it is we were asking for help with. That’s a success in my book, and it should be in yours too.
If you’ve got a bad feeling about something, then don’t do it.
Ginger tea is also good for a fever, but to much ginger in your tea will give you a fever. Always use fresh slices ginger instead of powdered ginger to avoid this problem.
Local honey plus lemon slices plus ginger slices all mixed in a jar with room to move and stored in your fridge make an amazing healthy allergy and cold fighting potion.
One of the easiest and most heartwarming recipes for a kitchen witch, soups! Their recipes are easily manipulated to suit your intention, plus they’re perfect for the upcoming winter!
Basic Ingredients:
– Carrots, Onions, Celery. These are the holy trinity. I also like to add garlic, potatoes, tomatoes, and others.
– vegetable/chicken broth and/or water.
– many recipes call for crushed tomatoes. I like diced, and can find them canned in any grocery store, but it’s up to you!
– (Optional) beans or lentils (if you buy dried lentils, cook them beforehand)
– (Optional) meat–sausage, beef, chicken. Cook before adding to the soup please!
Directions:
1. Cut up vegetables and sautee them in a big pot for about eight minutes. This is to soften them up and sweeten up the onions. Don’t add herbs yet!
2. If you bought canned beans, drain and rinse them. If you want thicker broth, you can crush up a can of beans into a paste and add them to the broth, or even throw them into a blender.
3. Set pot aside. Add tomatoes, beans, meat, broth. Bring to a boil, then let simmer for 20-30 minutes. Add any herbs you wish.
Common Vegetables:
Carrots – sex (with parsley for best results), fertility
Most herbs are not put into the broth until the broth is simmering, to prevent burning. The exception to this rule is bay, which is put in at the beginning. BEWARE of pepper! The longer the pepper cooks in the soup, the spicier the soup will be!
IF YOU’RE ADDING MEAT:
– Do not cut your vegetables with the same knife you cut meat with.
– Cook meat beforehand, but remember that it’ll be cooking in the broth for a time afterwards, or be careful not to overcook.
– Most meat is diced into half-an-inch-squares.
Other Tips:
– Stir clockwise to create, counter-clockwise to take away.
– You can carve sigils into some vegetable slices.
– Cook with a crystal near your pot to boost a spell’s effectiveness.
– Fire and water are prominent elements here! Draw upon their power.
And that’s it!! Have a lovely winter full of great company and nourishing meals!
