Bells might just be the earliest form of superstitious practise that I remember. My baba attached three sakura-patterned suzu bells on my schoolbag as a kid, purportedly for good luck and protection from evil spirits â and Japan is far from the only place to have associated bells and bellringing with mystic practise. Theyâve been used worldwide to ward off evil and carry messages â and in a more metaphysical sense, sound is the movement of energy through substance. Sounds have the potential to work powerful magic.
Here are some of the ways Iâve found utilising bells to be helpful to my craft. While Iâm more likely to use traditional suzu type bells, your own background, path and culture will likely have its own types of bells â and as ever, bells can be ornate antiques or they can be a bottle cap in a tin can, as long as theyâre used with intent.
GETTING STARTED
đ As with so much of the craft, if youâre new to the witching bell, itâs a matter of exploration and experimentation. Get a âfeelâ for what works for you and the specific bell youâre using.
đ
Itâs good practise to ensure that the bell itself is cleansed, warded and protected â you donât want anything nasty tapping into that power. All witching tools can do as much harm as good, intentional or accidental.
đ
A good way to begin incorporating bells into your craft is infuse them into any typical ritual that youâre comfortable with, or even just a prayer or moment of contemplation at your altar if you have one.
đ Give the bell a soft ring while focusing on the energy itâll ripple and move, try to track the movements it creates and what it touches. The tone itâs sending out.Â
The most primal and versatile use of the bell â and what many of the below come down to â is simply another manner of physically channelling energy, giving it shape and direction.
PROTECTION
đ
âPassiveâ bells such as windchimes or small bells attached to belongings you donât want disturbed are a starting point. They will scare off some forms of spirit all by themselves, especially if appropriately blessed, charmed or enchanted. Or cursed.
đ Gently tolling can draw energy into a ward or circle you are forming and enforce its protective properties, or for a simple cleanse, letting the sound travel to every corner of the area you are protecting. Itâs a little more âcuttingâ than a smoke or incense cleansing, which I view as more âgentleâ forms of cleansing. Both have their uses.
đ Harder tolling is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful ways in which to enforce a banishing â however, itâs best to you know what youâre doing with the bell before you go bashing it about.
DISCERNMENT
đ
Bells can have quite the effect on your perception and awareness. Ringing and then stopping, listening to the silence left in its wake, can bring you new perceptions or make things youâd previously missed obvious. Let it attune your mind and senses to something new, whether thatâs in your thoughts or something with a little more presence. Visualise travelling with the sound, taking heed of the energies it touches and disturbs. Take note of the echoes â youâll learn what they mean with experience.
đ A set of windchimes can let you know if something is passing through or if thereâs some unusual energy afoot â and, yes, it may also just be letting you know that itâs a particularly breezy day, but thatâs witchcraft for you.
CONJURING
đ This can be as simple as calling good energies to witching tools, spell jars, tarot decks, crystals, altars and shrines, your favourite teddy bar, anything at all.
đ With spirit work, it can truly help to magnify your âcallingâ. This can range from gently bringing your latest offering to the attention of your friendly neighbourhood house spirit â all the way to trying to catch the attention of something more. Be mindful, however. As I said, I consider bells pretty powerful tools and a call thatâs too loud is not good spirit work practise for the spirit workerâs own sake. It can really help coax something out of hiding if youâre gentle with it, though.
COMMUNING
đ
Some use bells to mark the beginning and end of a ritual, and Iâve read that in Wiccan practise an altar bell can be used to invoke the Goddess, although as a non-Wiccan, Iâll welcome corrections on that if Iâm wrong.
đ
In my experience, very simple forms of communication via bell work a lot better than anything too complex â âcome hereâ and âstay awayâ have already been covered, and other than that they can serve as greetings or signals of a start or end of some practise or ritual, the opening or closing of a door, etc.
đ They can also serve as a warning or a litmus test regarding spirits, a signalling of your presence and awareness, lack of fear, or willingness to defend â but be prepared to deal with whatever responses these garner.
BINDING
đ Bindings are where you most often see that famous (clockwise) circular motion of the bell, embodying the meaning of the spell. This can be a simple binding to seal a spell or charm or enchantment, or a spirit-binding.
đ Personally, spirit-binding is something I do as little as possible simply due to my beliefs holding the autonomy of spirits in very high regard. However, sometimes situations arise that call for it, and Iâm aware that not all bindings are unwilling. Far from it â and some spirits are dangerous when unbound.
đ As an animist (believing that all things, including inanimate objects, contain a spirit of their own), I consider gently nudging a spirit back into its physical form a sort of semi-binding, and that can be useful.
Iâll leave you all with a note that I am an urban apartment-dwelling witch through and through, so I understand that we canât all be jangling away at all hours. I myself have a glass windchime in my front window that makes a distinct but muted sound when disturbed by passers-through, and highly recommend wooden ones also. I also only use my small and relatively quiet suzu bell for my crafting â one given to me by my baba herself.
Feel free to add any of your own findings, and happy tolling.

Disclaimer: Spiritual/Magickal Healing should NEVER replace mundane treatment. If you have a physical or mental illness or health issues see a professional. Always check mundane causes before jumping to spiritual conclusions.
Blockages are an icky thing that happen to everyone for a multitude of reasons: Stress, tension, repressed emotions, physical ailments, trauma, a lack of grounding, and more. Depending on the severity they can manifest in a way that has you feeling them in/on your physical body – especially if youâre energy sensitive.
They are an obstacle in your energy flow and thus bring it out of its normal flow when present. This creates an inbalance in your system and results in different issues including, but not limited to:
⢠Constant fatigue
⢠Being easily irritated
⢠Trouble focusing
⢠Negative feelings
⢠Trouble grounding, cleansing, or doing other types of energy work
⢠Being spiritually/magickally âclosed offâ
⢠Being unable to express yourself properly
Note that this isnât a comprehensive and end-all be-all list. Also, again, be sure to check for mundane causes first.
So, how do you find a blockage? You could ask a healer or energy reader that can detect these things. If you want to do it yourself, there are multiple methods. Iâm going to list two.
Method 1
⢠Sit down somewhere. It works standing as well, but I prefer sitting.
⢠Take your hand. If you have a specific technique to make it more energy sensitive, use it now.
⢠Go over your body with it. Whether you hover over it or touch it is down to preferance; I prefer to hover.
⢠Send out âsensersâ that you glide into your energy system.
⢠Search through it, if you feel a resistance or an icky feeling somewhere, dig deeper. Maybe the energy is just a bit heavier or thicker there. Maybe itâs an energy point. Maybe itâs a blockage.
⢠Do that with your whole body. You DONâT have to be able to reach everywhere, just lengthen your energetic sensers for parts you canât touch/reach, like between your shoulders.
Method 2
(This method requires astral traveling.)
⢠Lie or sit down.
⢠Get into a comfortable position. If you need to be in a trance or meditative state to Astral Travel, do that here.
⢠Now, reach one of your astral bodyâs hands out.
⢠Put it inside your energetic body. It doesnât really matter where – personally, I like to start at the head or feet.
⢠Make sure to focus on your (Astral) hand and then start to go everywhere in your body with it. Feel it out. Any resistances? Icky feelings? How does the energy feel?
⢠Take note of any sensations you get. If something feels off, take a closer look.
Types of Blockages
@chaosjelly has a really good post about blockages and anomalies here. I will only extend on his list – read it if you havenât before.
1. Messy Thread âBallsâ. These are blockages that form when energies get cuddled up on their way through your system. These appear as bundles of, most often but not always, thin energy threads. They let energy through, though not as much as if there wasnât a blockage, but not in its regular flow. The energy that comes through is more âconfusedâ and disoriented, often not staying on its original path.
2. Walls. These are similar to the rocks Jelly mentioned. They can be tall, small, thin, thick, rectangular, oval, etc. but theyâre all very stiff and strong. These let very little if any energy through and often create dams.
3. Dams. These mostly form in combination with other blockages as itâs rare that energy starts to accumulate in these amounts without something else being in the way. Dams are exactly that: Accumulations of so much energy at one point that it starts to get thicker and taller until it stays in its place, creating an obstacle for the rest of the energy. How much energy they let through depends on how thick and tall the dam blockage is.
4. Hard Energy. Not necessarily a blockage but still troublesome. Optimally, Energy flows with ease and is flexible in its way. Due to a bunch of different possible reasons it can harden and with that normally slows down. Not rarely it even stops. The rest has to make itâs way around it and the energy is more prone to catching unwanted properties.
This is not an end-all-be-all guide, but I still hope it helps! Here are my other healing posts so far (will be updated once new ones are made):
So stay with me here. Iâm not saying that science has sat down and claimed that they correlate, but I just wanted to talk about the reasons I personally think they go hand in hand. I also want to note that I myself am a witch and very much believe in magick. But, I understand that a lot of people find witchcraft interesting, but canât come to accept it because they see no scientific evidence.
âş Witches claim that life is all connected through the Divine.Â
âź Science actually supports this by saying that everything is made of atoms, thus we are all just one big pool of atoms. So all life is indeed connected on the molecular level.
âş Witches claim that reincarnation happens. (Not all believe this, but this is a basis of what many believe.)
âź (Iâm not claiming that science supports this specifically, but parts of science can support this theory.) Science says that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, which means that our personal energy does not disappear. So what happens to it?
âş Witches claim that energy is the basis of their magick and what they manipulate to make changes in the environment around them.
âź Science does say that everything has energy so there really isnât much to say here.
âş Witches claim that clear quartz is a cleansing crystal that helps cleanse energies.
âź Science says that quartz are actually really useful in technology. Why? Because quartz are actually great at transforming energies.Â
âş Witches claim that they can manipulate the energy around them to make changes in the world. Often witches do this by focusing on specific energies and do things to manipulate the energy to make these changes.
âź Psychology says that people can change what happens around them by simply having a different mindset. This is called self-fulfilling prophecy and means that by predicting that something will happen it is more likely to happen. So when witches do rituals and spells they could be using the self-fulfilling prophecy method.
âş Witches use meditation to self calm themselves and talk with their spiritual guides.
âź Many doctors actually recommend regular meditation as it helps relieve stress, lowers blood pressure, and overall helps keep you happy.Â
Overall you can decide on your own what you think. However, I hope I helped some of you who are interested in witchcraft but need a bit of scientific support to really believe. Religion is all about what you feel like you need and if you donât need religion that is okay too!

My lovely morning featuring my camera shy son
Does anyone know of any tarot decks without naked women or r*pe-like scenes on them?? I recently got some kind of dragon deck and all the queens look like pin ups and thereâs one card that looks like a dude attacking a girl and it just makes me really uncomfortable, but I donât really have access to any local shops and donât know about any other decks. Suggestions would be wonderful thank you
Hello there! I had an idea I wanted to share with you guys!! I know music really helps me in my craft, and in my whole life in general. So I present to you the idea of EnChants. Essentially itâs a little piece of a melody you can hum or chant to enhance, just about anything really! I was humming this while cleansing and thought Iâd write it down to share!
If anyone is interested I was thinking of maybe offering to create personal ones as commissions?? (maybe like two dollars or a short little thing like this?) But otherwise to my musical magical friends, have fun with the concept!
