Through the Veil – A 31 Day Spirit Work Challenge

urbanspellcraft:

To honor the season and the thinning of the veil that happens during this part of the year, I decided it would be fun to set up a 31 day spirit work challenge for October! While I did design this with October 2017 in mind, you can start this anytime and in any month! To participate, do the challenges and then write a post about it! You don’t need to do this in order – if you want to rearrange days to fit your schedule feel free!

Tag me and I will reblog your post as well! I would love to see your progress during this challenge! You can also tag your posts #ttvchallenge2017 and I will follow along!

  • Day 1: Who or what got you interested in spirit work?
  • Day 2:

Write down 5 goals you have for the next year. They don’t have to be big. Can spirit work help you with these in any way? How?

  • Day 3:

Spend time working on your astral area. If you don’t have one yet, now is a good time to discover or design it! If you already know what it looks like, do some maintenance or work within it. Write about your experiences/what you did.

  • Day 4:

What is your favorite method(s) of communication? Write about it and why.

  • Day 5:

How are your protections/wards? Have you checked and reinforced them lately? Spend some time reinforcing your protections and wards today.

  • Day 6:

Spend some time designing an altar for your spirit work. If you want, you can actually set it up, but the focus is just on designing it! Use pinterest, make a blog post designing it, draw it, write about it… whatever! Just design your ideal spirit working altar!

  • Day 7:

Try to communicate with a spirit that you may overlook otherwise. This can be your car, the spirit of a rock, plant spirits, your house spirit, etc.

  • Day 8:

Spend some time aligning your energy points and/or doing some aura work. Alternatively, you can work on opening up your inner eye. Suggested exercise: [x]

  • Day 9:

Do a guided meditation of your choice with a spirit & record how it goes.

  • Day 10:

Discover what your astral self looks like. Draw or describe what your astral form looks like when you discover it. Was it different then how you expected or how you look like physically? If you already know your astral form, go ahead and do the above exercise as well, but has it changed over time?

  • Day 11:

Spend time outside during the day (if you can) with a spirit. Go for a walk, lounge on the grass and talk with them, go sit at a café – whatever you enjoy!

  • Day 12:

Draw a spirit of your choice. This can be a companion or another spirit you work with or have worked with in the past. It doesn’t have to be good or perfect even, but flex those creative muscles.

  • Day 13:

Find a song that best represents the spirit of your choice. Listen to it with them. Better yet, make a playlist with them or for them! Journal your thoughts, why you chose this song, how your spirit reacted to your choice, etc

  • Day 14:

Attempt or practice your automatic writing with a spirit! Post your results if you like, and journal your thoughts and feelings on this automatic writing session. How did it go? How do you think you can improve your next attempt?

  • Day 15:

Reflect on your favorite aspects of spirit work as well as your least favorite aspects of it, if any. Journal about it.

  • Day 16:

Figure out the tarot card that most represents the spirit of your choice. Explain why. (You can do this with more spirits if you want to as well.)

  • Day 17:

Go on an astral adventure with one of the spirits that you work with! If you can’t astral travel or project yet, spend this time practicing or meditating with your companion.

  • Day 18:

Spend some time thinking about 3-5 areas of your spirit work practice that can be improved, as well as different ways that you can improve upon these areas in the coming months/years. Write it all down.

  • Day 19:

Cleaning and cleansing day! Spend some time cleaning your space and spiritually cleansing it as well. Journal about how your space feels before and after the cleansing.

  • Day 20:

Pick a movie or TV show that both you and a spirit friend/family member will enjoy and watch it together

  • Day 21:

Pick any method of communication you don’t normally use or have never attempted and attempt to communicate with a spirit of your choice via this new route.

  • Day 22:

Spend time with a spirit outside (if possible) during the nighttime! Go for a walk (safely please!), stare at the stars together, or any other activity the two of you will enjoy together!

  • Day 23:

What is a type of spirit you would like to learn more about or work with more and why? Journal about it. After you journal, do a bit more research into that spirit and record your discoveries!

  • Day 24:

Spend some time connecting with your guides. Helpful guided meditations: [x] [x] [x] Youtube is also a great source for guided meditations! This workbook may also be helpful to some. [x]

  • Day 25:

Do you work with any past life spirits? Either spirits of you from your past lives, or spirits that you knew in your past lives. If yes, what are your experiences with them? If not, would you be curious? Why/why not?

  • Day 26:

Try playing a video game with a spirit! See if they like it or what they think of it!

  • Day 27:

Practice scrying with a spirit. Record how it goes.

  • Day 28:

Find out more about the past of a spirit of your choosing (that is willing to share with you, don’t push it or open any wounds). Where are they from? What is it like there? What are their friends like?

  • Day 29:

Spend time meditating and connecting to your higher self. Suggested Exercise: [x]

  • Day 30:

Practice energy work with a spirit. If you are just starting out with energy work or have never practiced it before, attempt sensing the energy of a spirit or plant!

  • Day 31:

Now that your 31 day journey is almost over, spend time reflecting over the last few weeks. What have you learned from this challenge, if anything? Did you try anything new? What day was the most challenging for you? The least? Journal your feelings about it.

Alternative Days: I created two alternative days that you can sub out with one of the days listed above, if needed.

  • Alt Day 1:

Practice energy shielding! This is really important when it comes to spirit work (in my opinion), and scales to skill level as well.

  • Alt Day 2:

Work with your own energy. Figure out how you feel energetically, and practice forming your own energy, as it can help you sense a spirits energy as well.

Special shout-out to @hoodiecladknight, @sifilord and @divineclecticism for your help in putting this together (& putting up with me while I did it)! Thank you to @magickalmenagerie for allowing me to use your workbooks and meditations as suggestions & your hard work making those! I couldn’t of done it without your imput and suggestions, so thank you all.

Plant Spirit Series: Trees

feistyceltic:

While I’m no expert on plant spirits I thought I’d make my own posts about them

Trees have spirits, all plants do, the only question is do they want to work with you?

Look at the trees, which ones feel inviting and which ones feel hollow or empty?

If there is a park near you, or theres trees in your backyard, I urge you to go see them.

Sit with them, talk to them (mentally or verbally) and even if you can’t hear them at first, they hear you.

If you want to give them a gift, try pouring some water at the base of the tree before you leave, the only water trees get (that isnt in the earth for the most part) is rain.

When you feel like a bond is forming, try keeping your hand on the tree while you talk to it/them, see if you can find the pulse of the tree, see if it gets warmer or colder when you talk to it.

All relationships take time, don’t rush things because if you don’t build a relationship with a person or spirit too quickly the foundation of it will be unsteady.

Be patient and Good Luck!

What are some good suggestions for house rules for companions?

thedragonslibrary:

serapphire:

Hello anon! That’s a great question. House rules should cover every scenario you can think of, and anything that makes you uncomfortable. Here are some good house rules to start with, and then you can work from there:

1. Do not bring spirits or entities that are not within our family into my home. (AKA, unbounds)
2. Do not manifest when I have company over that are not spirit-workers.
3. Do not manifest in ways that will break my belongings, or otherwise cause me accidental harm (Breaking glass, etc)
4. Do not move or take X item (X being item(s) that are precious to you, or are important, such as tax papers, an heirloom, etc.)

I recommend that house rules are written somewhere, so that they are easily accessible, and easy to point out. It can be in a book, or as a slip of paper at the bottom of your sock drawer. Other rules should include any that have to do with any illnesses you have, anxieties, or special circumstances. For example:

1. Do not manifest in ways that I can mistaken as a serious physical illness, such as shortness of breath
2. Do not manifest with a physical form (If you have a mental illness that causes you to hallucinate and you are unable to tell reality from a hallucination)

Some entities/spirits may also have their own house rules that you will need to follow as well. Be sure to write these down.

I hope you don’t mind me jumping in here and adding my two cents!  These are all very important house rules that can easily be glossed over and forgotten if one isn’t careful.  Rules are very important when it comes to establishing a family, especially a large one, because if you’re not vigilant and your spirits are very active, things can start to get out of hand.  It’s never too late to introduce house rules into your relationship with spirits, and it’s alright if you don’t cover your bases and have to introduce new ones as time goes on!

Here are some other rules that might seem sort of silly, but can really help enhance the enjoyment of your relationship if you’re sensitive about these sorts of things:

  1. Please do not interact with me or watch when I am doing something private (i.e., showering, using the toilet, having sex, etc.)
  2. Please do not manifest when I am doing something related to school and/or work.
  3. If you do not get along with another spirit in my family, please do what you can to ignore that spirit and not let it affect our companionship.
  4. Please do not cause me to dream OR daydream about [insert trigger here].
  5. Related to mental illness: Please do not manifest or do anything that causes me to doubt my sense of reality (i.e., moving things around when I am not in the room)
  6. JUST IN CASE: Please do not do anything to intentionally harm me or someone I love, or anyone I do not give you explicit permission to harm (sometimes protective spirits might get a little overzealous)

And, house rules don’t have to always be “don’t”s, either!  Here are some things you can enlist your spirits with:

  1. If you encounter an unbound spirit or malicious entity around me or my home, please protect me/find their purpose/chase them away.
  2. Please inform me if you feel that someone around me wishes me harm.
  3. Please protect my loved ones (children, siblings, parents, friends, etc.) in the same way you would protect me.

It’s also a nice idea, along the lines of this, to establish routines for you and your companions!  So, for example, if you decide you want to perform X type of magic once a week, and your companion is aligned with that magic, make it a regular event that happens at the same time, same place, same day each week. This will ensure that your companion is always ready for this type of event when you do it, and they won’t feel bothered or blindsided by your plans!

As always, treat a spirit companion like you would a family member or friend, but keep in mind that they are not always aware of human courtesies, nor what will and won’t bother you if they step over a certain line.  It’s your responsibility to make sure they are informed about what is acceptable and unacceptable.  In order for a companionship to be a symbiotic relationship, both parties need to be aware of each other’s limits.  That being said, make sure you ask the spirit what is is comfortable and uncomfortable with as well!  If there is anything that makes the spirit uncomfortable, they will let you know.

If we’re interested in a custom conjugation, what would you recommend for someone who’s never kept a spirit before?

My House Rules for Spirit Guests and Companions

lonesome-bones:

Hey everyone! This is just a list of my house rules, as inspired by @spiritvexer. If you have any other ideas, just let me know! I am probably missing a few, honestly.

  • No spirit may enter any room of my other family members. The living room, kitchen, and my room are fine, but bedrooms are not. This includes the bedroom in the basement. Bathrooms are off limits unless I say it is alright. In other words, unless you have express permission, the answer is no, you cannot go into their room. I have a lot of younger siblings, and I am afraid they would be… startled by the presence of a spirit.
  • All welcome spirits have a right to my room, my altar, and my closet. It is spacious enough for you to chill in, if you want to. I also have individual spirit vessels that are solely yours, and cannot be shared. If you want a different one, would like to trade, etc, just let me know. I will work it out for you.
  • When I work with other spirits, do not interrupt either of us. We will all have one on one time together, so don’t worry. I will definitely allow you to mingle and speak to one another, so just wait a few minutes until I am finished speaking with them.
  • If you have a problem with another spirit, tell me. I can’t fix it if I don’t know what’s wrong. If they are being difficult, malevolent, or dangerous, I need to know right away. Please do not hesitate to come to me about it.
  • You have a right to energy. If you need some, ask me for it. I will either lend you some of my own, help you find a good source, or place charged objects in your vessel.
  • You may travel with me if you like. I don’t go many places, but where I do go, you are welcome to go as well. The only place I would not like to be followed is the bathroom.
  • If my home or self is attacked, if someone else is attacked, or if one of you is attacked, we as a family have the responsibility to protect one another. Do everything in your power to tell me what is going on, and try your hardest to protect the object of the attack. Especially spiritual attacks. If helping would seriously endanger you, please just tell me instead.
  • You may have non-malevolent entities in my room. If even for a second you doubt their intentions are harmless, then they may not come in. Do not share my secrets and my protection systems with anyone, spirit or otherwise.
  • You may communicate with other people, especially witches, diviners, etc. The only things I ask are that you do not leave me without telling me, or explaining why you are going to someone else’s home for however long you are going/staying, and do not share any information I have not shared with them.
  • When I do a cleansing, stay in your vessels. I will pass over them, and you will not be caught up and swept away. You may leave the house if you like, but remember that I have to welcome you back in to have you again. I will do divination three hours after a cleansing to make sure everyone is accounted for.
  • I will divine with you personally once a week, or as a group twice a week. If you ever need me before then, get my attention in some way, and I can try to speak with you asap.
  • Do not attack me, my family, or my friends that are welcomed into my home. If they cross the threshold without permission, then they are not under my protection.

House Rules

urbanspellcraft:

So for those of you that are spirit keepers/companions, or are spirit workers of any frequency, you may know a bit about house rules. Now keep in mind, you don’t need to have house rules. Some don’t find that they need them, some prefer not to have them. I choose to have a set of house rules because I find that for me, it helps bring a little peace and harmony to my house, and that if anything did go wrong, I have something to refer to. Anyone in my house, be it astral being, spirit or entity, from white arts to dark arts to black arts, is expected to follow these rules while they are part of my household/in my house.

These are my house rules. Feel free to use them if you like, modify them, add/subtract as you see fit. I have had a lot of success with these so far, and no incidents. Depending on who is in your family/keep/court, you may need to add rules, or subtract them. But these are what work for me & my family. What is in bold is my actual rule, and then I will expand upon the rule if I see fit.

1. Never harm or show disrespect to myself, my significant other, any other member of my family, friends or welcome household guests. This is obvious… I don’t want any of my spirit family hurting each other, nor do I want them hurting any human or animal that is welcome in my house.

2. Never harm any children or pets.

3. Never show yourself to anyone besides myself in your true form, unless your true form is something that would not scare them. (Example: If it is a child, appear as something child friendly.) I have a few not so pleasant looking family members, or some beings that in their true form are pretty terrifying. I wouldn’t want them showing themselves to a child or an adult.

4. Sexual contact is only welcome with me and will not be permitted with anyone else. Basically just don’t go touching my boyfriend or anyone else, they don’t appreciate it.

5. No physical manifestations at work in front of anyone but myself. Patients and coworkers are not to know about you. Some of you may not need this, but I work with the public and don’t need a spirit manifestation scaring patients away.

6. Protect yourself at all times. If something comes up and I can do something about it, I will help.

7. Do not hamper with communication. This covers and includes communication between yourselves, or with me. If I am working specifically with one or with one group, I don’t need anyone else butting in and hampering that communication. Wait until I am done.

8. Do your part for the highest good of the household, including all spirits, entities, astral beings & other. All living people, spirits, entities, astral beings & other shall work at living together peacefully. Bullying wont be tolerated, if you have an issue, contact me.

9. We work as a team, with me being the team leader. If you have suggestions, tell me. If you are unsure to my wishes, ask me or look within. If they have doubts about something, my family is always welcome to “look within” for my wishes, if I am for some reason unavailable to ask.

10. No twisting my words.

11. No lying. Do not pretend to be something/someone you are not. Do not make anything up to make someone else look bad.

12. Disarm malicious magic that is sent my way by someone else or that is around by circumstance.

13. Keep watch over property & always be ready to act against any pending issue.

14. Help identify any possible conflicts. Help judge the character of people, spirits, entities, astral beings & other around us. This has actually been a useful rule in several situations. Its really two rules condensed into one, as well, but its how I have it written in my notebook.

Thats it! They are fairly long, but also fairly basic, and cover the essentials. Most rules are pretty obvious, but I would rather state the obvious then regret not stating the obvious later on. Again, this is just what I use for my house rules (its nice to have a digital copy on here as well) – you can use them if you like, add/remove rules as needed. & if you don’t do spirit work, or have spirits in your regular household, you don’t even need to have this.

Enjoy!

infernoelf:

I’m going to say this because reasons. When you attempt to bond with other people’s spirits without permission, that’s not only rude and disrespectful, but a HUGE invasion of privacy. Where do you get off on thinking you’re entitled to do such a thing? What you’re basically doing is that you’re barging into someone’s bond, uninvited and unannounced, and stepping all over the connection they have with their companion. The same can be said for a clan of entities that speak solely to one person. There is a reason that single entity or a group of entities chose to speak with THAT particular human. Not you or anyone else.

But I have -insert type of entity here-  so I can see the -insert group entity name here- !!

Ok, but listen to me for a second. That is absolutely ok. That is to be expected as you and the entity bond. You’re showing them your world and they want to show you theirs. However, when you claim you can conjure an entity from that exact clan yourself, that’s where the problem arises. The reason being is that the human who connected you two from the start either has a “contract”, or the group trusts them enough to be connected to humans in the first place. Just because you have one of those entities in your spirit family, doesn’t give you a free pass to conjure some yourself and give them away. It doesn’t work that way.

If you keep sticking your nose in where it doesn’t belong, you’re REALLY going to have a bad time. So please keep this in mind if you want to speak to someone’s spirit companion. You could always send an ask in and do just that. Ask. As long as the human companion and spirit companion are ok with it. If not, don’t get upset. They have the right not to answer you if they want.

This is a really good point. You wouldn’t want someone barging in and messing with your relationship, so DON’T DO IT TO SOMEONE ELSE.

Dealing with plant spirits:

solsmoonrise:

So I’m a spirit worker, and though I’ve only been practicing a little bit over a year, I’ve worked with many different spirits with most of them being plants.  This just comes from my own personal experience, so you don’t have to take this as law.

General:

Different kinds of plants have different personalities (obviously).  And as each plant has their own unique personality, generally they tend to be similar to other plants of the same type: cacti, succulents, vines, herbs, flowers, even going down to specific types such as lavender, pine trees, orchids, etc.  And then, how they react to communication depends on what stage they are in: seedling, middle, adult, etc.

Communication:

In general, plants tend to be fairly slow with communication.  And they generally don’t use words. The plants i have worked with preferred sending general feelings and images of what they were trying to communicate.  So be patient with yourself while working towards that communication.  Whenever you try communication, start by giving a small offering.  It can be elaborate, it can be watering it, spreading fertilizer (eggshells are good, a bit of sugar, stuff like that) around it, weeding around the roots, and small stuff like that.  Introduce yourself, and just start talking.  Explain what your day was like and what you did.  You can sing to the plant, they tend to love that.  Seedlings are more likely to talk very quickly to you, while old plants tend to take longer.  The time frame can be from a couple of hours to a couple weeks depending on the spirit.  If you want to create a relationship with the spirit, you’re going to have to communicate with the spirit regularly.  This process will take a while as it would trying to improve any friendship.

Now what?:

After you’ve introduced yourself to the spirit, it’s time to create a friendship!  Giving them small gifts/offerings is a great step.  Spending time with them will also help with that.  It doesn’t all have to be communication, you can read books aloud to them, watch movies with them, or anything else of that sort.  Find out their name!  Each spirit will have their own name, much like we do.  Some of them are really hard to spell and/or pronounce so I won’t be giving any examples here.  After building that friendship, you can do most anything you want!  You can have them assist you with spells, amplify your energy, and other such things.  Keep in mind that the amount of energy that the spirit will have depends on their vessel, the plant.  The larger the life force, the larger the amount of energy that you can borrow is.

Dealing with death:

Now, most of the plants I have worked with have been seedlings, and because I’m not perfect in the slightest many of them have died.  For me, dealing with the dead plant is a ritual to honor the spirit as it passes into a place where I haven’t been able to communicate with it yet.  I give it back to the earth (bury it if I can, or just leave it in a place where it can give back to the earth.  It gets a small funeral service, stating what they did for me, what I loved about them, that they will be missed, etc.  Before you leave them there give them a small offering to help it’s passage, water, fertilizer, eggshell, etc.  This isn’t necessary, but it is respectful and a good way for the spirit not to be mad.

Offerings

  • pebbles
  • water
  • fresh mulch
  • cleaning up forests
  • making bee feeders
  • songs
  • talking to them
  • meditating with them
  • storytelling
  • sugar
  • biodegradable food
  • weeding around them
  • eggshell powder
  • cold tea

Now, treat your plants well and get to know them!
