Talking to Trees: A Nature Spirit Tutorial

spiritionary:

dakinidarce:

Hey everybody! Buddhist mystic and energy worker, Darce, here with a little tutorial on chatting with trees. This tutorial is focused on tree spirits, but the same principles can be applied to almost any variety of nature spirits you might encounter. After reading others’ posts and practicing some nature spirit communication at home, I wanted to give it a go in the woods on my parents’ property while I visited them this weekend.

I had some wonderful experiences, and wanted to share with you all my advice for doing this if anyone needs help getting started! Feel free to DM me if you have questions or share any tips you’ve picked up with nature spirit communication 🙂

Preparation:

  • You definitely should have done some work on developing your intuition/inner-wisdom/psychic abilities (whatever your name is for this skill set) first or trying to communicate with nature spirits in the forest will be difficult. The same skills you need to talk to nature spirits are related to the same type of skills used for discerning meanings during divination, for intuitively selecting which of three potential herbs to use for a potion, or for talking to any other type of spirit guides or companions. It’s about tapping into your intuition and being able to have confidence in it. Make sure you feel comfortable with this on a basic level first!
  • Similar to the astral, there are many spirits – some peaceful and some not so well-intentioned – living in and traversing areas of nature, especially where there’s a dense population of trees and underbrush. Just to be safe, I put up wards before going into the woods. If you happen to run into any trickster spirits, you’ll be safer – and it’s much better to be safe than sorry! (I let the wards down a little when I encounter a spirit I feel safe around while chatting.)
  • If you have sodalite and/or blue lace agate, those are good crystals to help with opening the channels of communication. So if you happen to have either crystal, bring them with you and anything else that helps you with spirit communication in general.
  • Also if possible, bring an offering for whomever you end up talking to. The offering can be as small and simple as some water to pour over trees’ roots, or whatever you think a tree in your area might appreciate as a little gift! It’s the gesture that matters most.

Interaction:

  1. When I approach a tree before I do anything I try to look at it and tune into its energy. Does it have a nurturing vibe? Angry? Quiet? Welcoming? Interested? Tired? Timid? Young and youthful? Old and wise? Try to see if you can feel out a little bit of this tree – which will give you a sense if to talk or not.
  2. If you get decent vibes, then I ask in my head or out loud, “May I speak with you?” and usually get an intuitive sense of yes/no usually clearly right away. If it’s anything less than a clear yes, then I don’t approach any further and respectful try another tree.
  3. If I get a yes, I’ll put my hand on the trunk. If you have the crystals, you can put them between your hand and the bark and channel their energies to increase your connection. Then I just continue the conversation. Sometimes there are pauses filled with silence. Sometimes the spirit’s answers are feelings, not words. I usually get a sense of the tree’s personality the more I talk to them, and the more I talk to surrounding trees – other conversations with other trees will come up sometimes bc the trees nearer each other are very aware of each other.
  4. Make sure you don’t start asking anything from these spirits until you’ve established a good relationship first – or unless you are able to provide something equally valuable to the spirit in return. I recently asked a tree spirit to help me with a spell, and she agreed but asked that I provide her some positive energy later. You can still give offerings from afar – it all really depends on what the spirit would like. Don’t ever assume what they do or don’t want with regards to anything. Just ask and you’ll find out (:

Conclusion:

Afterward, I thank the tree and ask if they want the offering I have. Some do, some don’t, some don’t care either way. If the answer is yes, I give the offering and say goodbye for now.

Everyone’s experience is different, but hopefully this short tutorial will give you some useful tips to work with. I must thank @astralcaw for showing me their posts on tree conversations! It inspired me and helped me to do the same.

In summary, the key is to 1) be as respectful to the spirits as possible, and 2) trust your gut and your feelings about what you feel the tree is saying – your ability to get this more accurate will increase over time, but won’t work if you aren’t confident in yourself!

Tree Spirit Society

spiritionary:

image

I use the word “society” in the title of this post very loosely, but I couldn’t think of quite the right word for what to call the way trees socially organize because it’s hardly organization at all. Nevertheless, I have observed in many different locations (Southern California, upstate New York, Philadelphia) that there are typically different social types of tree spirits, and when there are many trees their spirits socially relate to each other and to others around them in certain ways depending on the environment and social status of the tree.

Just as other classes of spirits such as court-affiliated fae and land spirits have a tendency to “claim” territories in different ways as being under their watchful eye or political control, trees usually stake such a claim to at least the territory around their roots if not a several foot radius around them (or under their branch coverage). When you have a whole forest or even just a grouping of trees, then that collective “owns” the territory together.

The reason why “society” is perhaps too strong a word and so is “politics” or “hierarchies” when it comes to the social patterns of trees, it’s because although trees are extremely wise and complex spirit beings, they are not socially complex compared to human or spirit societies. Most of a tree’s life consists of interacting with the environment around it including nearby trees, plants, and humans as well as whatever other spirits cross its path such as other nature spirits, fae, and more. Some trees may get lightly involved in politics if dragged into it due to other spirits having wars or conflicts in said trees’ territory. But usually, trees just mind their own business and are more concerned with day-to-day life.

That being said, so far in working with tree spirits from various locations, I’ve noticed several common “types” in terms of social relations and social status. These are all terms/categories I’ve come up with for describing what I observe, but tree spirits I’ve met do not refer to themselves this way at all. There are also exceptions and trees that might fall in between two categories such as between rural/urban, alpha/beta, beta/baby.

Rural Trees – In forests, woods, jungles, or other places with lots and lots of trees but very little urban development, I notice that trees have a lot more energy control over the land and space around them. This also means they have a lot less vested interest in necessarily talking to humans or spirit workers interacting with them, and when you do, there’s a sort of power dynamic you feel that you are on their land. I have never seen a group of rural trees without alpha trees naturally having popped up amongst the others.

Urban Trees – Unlike rural areas, in urban spaces trees are often more isolated, frequently exposed to human contact (or even cut/damaged/pruned/gardened), and sometimes were artificially planted by humans. Although all tree spirits seem to have an inherent power over the immeditate area surrounding them, this is greatly diminished for many urban trees (depending on the individual tree and their circumstances). I find that many urban trees planted in concrete on sidewalks who are isolated from trees around them and exposed to a lot of nasty city chemicals and gases tend to be in a constant state of tenseness and discomfort. The power dynamic that I observe in rural environments in completely reversed in human ones, most urban trees are acutely aware of the power humans have over them and have a much greater stake in how they relate to humans. While some will still completely ignore or snub humans and spirit workers, many urban trees are much more social towards them and relate to human beings very differently than rural trees.

Alpha Trees – Basically all trees have some influence/claim/control over the area under and immediately adjacent to them, but sometimes I have encountered trees so powerful that they rule over a big swath of land around them – and usually over other trees as well if they exist in that area. So far, I’ve only ever encountered what I’d call alpha trees who are much older and physically bigger than most trees. I can usually tell they are an “alpha” from the large energy presence of their spirit, their size and appearance, and in how they speak to me and how other trees in the area speak about them. In an area whether rural or urban, when there are many trees around, the alpha is usually seen as the “head tree” and deferred to for big decisions by other trees or sought after for guidance. There is no formal title or distinction for the alpha trees and they are not elected or appointed because there is no actual political system. It just naturally occurs that the elder, stronger trees tend to take up this informal leadership role.

Beta Trees – Most normal tree spirits are what I’d call “betas,” as they have some claim and influence over the territory around them, but if there is an alpha tree they are secondary to that tree’s overall power over the local area. As trees can be proud and independent spirits, betas won’t always like to admit it but they sometimes have to defer to the will of the alpha tree.

Baby Trees – These are smaller, younger tree spirits who are rather powerless compared to other trees and are still learning the ways of the world. Some rural baby trees I’ve met barely understand what human beings are because they haven’t seen many yet. They may have been biologically parented by a nearby tree, but this does not necessarily mean the biological tree parent will “raise” a baby tree. Usually, the physically closest older trees to a baby tree will do minimal care-taking as needed from time to time. It’s a very loose, very casual “parental” role as tree spirits can grow up completely independently as well.

Spirit Communication: Tips

winkingwyvern:

Here are some tips I’ve learned over the years about working with spirits. None of these include tips pertaining to communicating with spirits via tarot cards or a pendulum. This is all about how to sense and interact with a spirit without the aid of any tools.

  • First of all, as with anything, set up protection. This is a disclaimer I have to give every time I talk about anything. Set up boundaries ahead of time as well if you are dealing with a new spirit.
  • You’re sitting there and you get excited every time a leaf blows in the wind. “It’s a sign,” you exclaim. No, it’s not. You need to learn the skill of discernment before you start anything else. You will pick this up quickly the more you work with spirits. Not every waking thing is a sign from a deity or spirit. This will allow the real interactions you have with them become richer and filled with more meaning.
  • Quit trying so hard. The more you strain to hear or get in contact with a spirit, the more your mind will be closed to hearing or feeling them. It seems to be a stupid law of the universe.
  • When it comes to clairaudience, you can either experience internal or external clairaudience. Internal can either sound like your own “mind’s voice” talking or it can differ. External clairaudience is when you actually hear something being said. Usually the external clairaudience will happen when you are caught off guard and the internal communication will be more common.
  • The voice of a spirit will come quickly and all at once without giving you any time to think about it. If you are having a back and forth conversation the spirit will sometimes answer you before you can even finish.
  • A little trick I used to use was to just straight up ask myself if I just said something versus a spirit just saying something when experiencing internal clairaudience. I would ask myself in my head, “did I just say that”. If it was me who made up what I wanted to hear the spirit say (rarely, this was more when I started out) then I could say “yes, that was me talking” with ease. However, if I was hesitant to say “yes, that was me talking”, even for a split-second, I knew it wasn’t me. This may or may not work for you. Try this method or set up some kind of system like that where you can check yourself. Eventually you learn the pattern and will no longer need this for discernment.
  • Sometimes you won’t hear any words. You will get feelings and images of what the spirit is saying and your brain will translate these feelings and images into a narrative.
  • Outside of them talking, some will make sounds to let you know they’re around. While these are usually external sounds (tapping for instance), sometimes it can be a sound you hear internally. I’ve been in contact with one spirit who had a distinct and odd sound he made as he talked.
  • Outside of clairaudience, look for synchronicity. If you keep seeing images of snakes, hearing unrelated people talking about snakes, and turn on the tv and see snakes – something is trying to get your attention with snakes. I don’t believe in coincidences. However, don’t ask a spirit to show you snakes as a sign and sit there and strain your eyes to look for snake imagery. It doesn’t work like that. You have to let your subconscious find the theme the spirit wants you to find. This goes with the above rule: stop trying so hard.
  • Watch for flashes of light, orbs, figures, and movement out the corner of your eye.
  • Be very aware of images flashing in your head briefly. These are important. One deity I work with always shows me, very quickly, the bottom half of his face smiling when he’s talking to me. Once again, don’t try hard trying to force yourself to see any visuals. These should come naturally and will almost always catch you off guard and when you’re least expecting it.
  • Be aware of hyper realistic dreams and dreams that make an impact on you. You know, the dreams that you can remember even years later. These are usually riddled with direct messages from a spirit or any kind of higher being.
  • Spirits will often touch you. It’s just how they are. I have one deity that will touch my hair. He’s even done it in the middle of class. It’s how I know he is with me. It’s all up to the spirit. You’ll find out how they get your attention. The same goes for temperature change. Some will present warm or cold spots. Some will give you a boost of energy to let you know they’re around. Some energies are famous for giving off energy that makes you feel tipsy like you just started drinking booze. Take notice of all sorts of physical stimuli and recognize their energy signature.
  • Set boundaries. If you don’t want to be touched or even if you want to cut off all contact with a spirit because you are hesitant, ask them politely yet firmly and they should oblige. If even for a second they ignore your wishes you can either ask one more time, this time all business, or you can go straight to booting them out of your space. Standard banishing, cleansing, and protections apply.
  • Pay attention to your energy and how you feel (if you have a knack for feeling energy). Do you feel anxious or afraid when they’re around even if you are supposedly talking to a nice, non dark arts spirit? Be wary. Some spirits naturally and passively give off negative feelings that can cause anxiety, fear, depression, and other things even if they mean no harm to you. These are usually the darker spirits. If you know that’s what you are talking to, then great!
  • Spirits lie. They lie about what they are, how great they are, and can even lie to you about how great YOU are just to gain your trust. Learn the difference between a true compliment giver and a kiss ass if you get complimented by a spirit.
  • Don’t obsess over it. I love talking to spirits. It’s fun! It can become an obsession, though. You wouldn’t bug your flesh friend every waking moment of every single day, so don’t do it to your spirit friend.
  • Have fun and use good judgement. Most of all, be patient. It’s a skill you work at. It won’t happen over night. Working on opening your third eye, using sigils to aid in communication, using crystals and herbs, and other tools will help you even more. Don’t try to rush it. Let it come naturally.

Spirit Communication Tips

ekonsine:

Since I just opened my spirit companion shop recently, I wanted to share some tips for you guys! These tips will generally help in connecting with unbound spirits, but can be useful in spirit communication with companions as well!

Things to keep in mind before doing any sort of spirit work:

  1. Believe in yourself, belief holds power
  2. Let go of doubt, stop worrying about accuracy
  3. Your intent holds incredible power, be aware of it
  4. Feel and sense first, analyse last
  5. Release all expectations of what will happen
  6. Release all tension and preconceived notions
  7. Balance your energy, empty your mind
  8. Research personality ties of colours/elements/etc
  9. Don’t rely on divination, especially not at first

As for the communication with a spirit:

  1. Find your intent for spirit communication. Attempt to picture it in your mind, try to perceive it the best way you can. It does not need to be anything specific, but what you think is what you invite, more or less. Understand well what you want to draw to you, and make sure you don’t let your mind wander while you are doing this. If you wish to communicate with a companion, picture them, their energy, and what you want out of the communication with them.
  2. You can also create a visual space in your mind to have your conversation in. This is more along the lines of astral travel, but you will receive the same sort of impressions, it just might appear more fluid. Typically this takes a lot more focus though and you’ll miss out on impressions outside of visual impressions. I don’t suggest this for communicating with a spirit that you are unfamiliar with.
  3. Associate your intent with something physical. If you want to communicate with a spirit that is emotionally forward, you will probably want a spirit of the water element. Having a cup or bowl of water will assist in drawing a spirit of that nature to you by giving them another medium. Be as creative as you wish with this, whatever physically expresses your desire for spirit communication will do. In the case of a spirit companion, this will suffice as an offering or a gift to them!
  4. Contact can come through in small pieces, or large chucks of information, and is often garbled and hard to process. Let the information come to you but don’t process it as it does. Also be patient! When just starting out you might only get the impression of a colour, or a feeling! Do not be discouraged.
  5. Spirit communication can happen by request, but it can also happen quite randomly. Always be aware that a spirit can communicate with you at any time, if for whatever reason they are drawn to the activity you are doing, or your energy.
  6. Some contact may seem insignificant, but don’t dismiss any impressions, even if they are simply of a certain colour or smell, they most always have a deeper meaning
  7. Contact may be visual, audible, or sensory, don’t dismiss the medium of communication either. It can be a combination of all of the above, or even just one of the above.
  8. Contact might not be triggered when you expect it to! Even a change in the weather, or a song on the radio can pave the path to having an impression or contact from a spirit. If you’re not seeing results, spice things up a bit, try a slightly different approach!
  9. Go with your first thought of belief, don’t second guess or question anything, not yet anyway. Feel and sense first.
  10. Pay attention to patterns and coincidence! Having a good understanding of mathematical probability will help you distinguish when a spirit is influencing your environment and when they are not. This is particularly useful during divination! I always know a spirit isn’t communicating with me, or is not at a good energy level to communicate because the results are random and don’t follow a pattern that makes sense. So I think it is important to keep an eye out for patterns and coincidence in your life, even though it is not directly obvious as communication, it is.
  11. Write it all down, don’t think about it just write down everything that comes to mind, scribble all the impressions that come to you no matter how much sense they make at the time. They’re all puzzle pieces to a puzzle that you’ll process later, might be months later. Do not dismiss anything as not spirit contact if that is the first thing that comes to mind. You do not need to confirm it, just write it down! If it becomes a pattern that is your confirmation.
  12. Hold off on divination until you have experienced impressions from a spirit, and have some understanding of their energy and a pattern of their behaviour. When starting to confirm your spirit communication with divination, ask questions you already know the answer to! It will take time to channel the spirit through a reading, so don’t ask hard questions until you see a pattern of accurate results. I wish it was as simple as just doing a reading with a spirit you don’t know, but it takes familiarity for an extremely accurate reading.
  13. Practice all of this often, even if you don’t get results, results and better accuracy come with time. It takes a considerable amount of energy to receive information from a spirit, which only comes with practice and becoming accustomed to doing so.

I hope this assists at least some of you in your spirit work and with your companions! Don’t forget that my ask box is always open, no matter how silly your question might seem!

Embarrass them by hanging out in ball pits.

Low-energy spirit communication

prismatic-conjurings:

Everyone has days where we are simply too tired to even sleep. This may make full on conversations, pendulum readings, or even noticing the signs of a spirit impossible. However, working with spirits almost 24/7 has lead me to understand and find some interesting ways to communicate with my etheric friends.

1. Ask questions out loud and wait for the answer.
Whilst you may not have enough energy to communicate in a way to get instant answers, your spirit friends will try their best to reply to open-ended conversations. Often, if you ask a question and wait, you may feel or experience their answer. Falle likes to do this occassionally, if I ask him how he’s feeling, I often feel his emotions.

2. Random Number Generators
Similar to a pendulum, you can use websites like random.org to speak to your spirit companions on low energy days. It’s very easy to establish, put the range of the generation from 1-2 or 1-3 (for a maybe option), then tell the spirit to answer a 1 if yes and a 2 if no. Ask a few starter questions, such as their name, and then you can ask them whatever you need to.

3. Shufflemancy
Similar to the RNG method above, this uses the spirit’s ability to manipulate results. Asking questions and then hitting shuffle on your playlist, the result that comes up is their answer. Analyze the lyrics to form a clearer picture.

4. Come in contact with their vessel.
I have found that if I am low on energy, coming into contact with the spirit’s vessel is very helpful. Even on low days, holding, wearing, or meditating with the vessel has allowed me to maintain contact and communication.

5. Ask for signs.
Is your spirit friend represented by something? Are they called or do they appreciate certain aspects of our world? For instance, let’s take my guide Rolana. She is a Robin and is represented by a Robin or Robin feather. On low energy days, if i ask her for a sign, normally within a few minutes i either see or hear a robin.

6. Ask them to manifest.
Manifesting may not be your spirit’s favourite task, however on low energy days, asking them to manifest is sometimes the easiest thing. Noises, smells, or physical anamolies (?) can be established as answers (tap twice for yes, tap once for no, ect.) and can be effective if your spirit is feeling up to it.

This is my attempt at an informational article! I know it is quite scattered and rambly, however I hope it can help anyone who needs it or learns from it!

How to take care of your spirit companion?

thedragonscholar:

@starryskywitch asked: “In a recent ask you mentioned that spirits need to eat, could you explain how that works? And also maybe the basics of taking care of a spirit if you’d be so kind? C:

I’ve been meaning to write a post on this for a long time. Then I saw someone did it already xD http://magic-for-the-masses.tumblr.com/post/160143675923/do-you-know-of-any-guids-for-taking-care-of-your  ( @magic-for-the-masses ) But I still decided to go ahead and write my own.

I think a good way to look at this is by taking into account the pyramid of needs. By the way, I’m no psychologist, so I don’t know if this is severely outdated or not, but I think it’s a good basis. (For further reading into this, you can look up Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.)

So the base is physiological needs. Food, water, warmth, rest. Or in the case of your spirit, whatever they need to drink/eat so they don’t starve, whatever weather and environment they need (if any is fine, okay. Mr.Dragon doesn’t *need* a lava river, but he’s definitely happy in one.), and time to rest. (I go deeper on what they eat here: http://thedragonscholar.tumblr.com/post/161007882706/what-do-spirits-eat-upg )

But then you think “But Scholar! I *have* to build wards around me and my companion for them to be safe! That’s vital!” And yes, but not physiological. Apparently this person first stated there are basic needs, and then made subdivisions. The wards fall into safety needs. A secured astral place, or well, your own home, with wards and barriers around it. The security of knowing they won’t be eaten up by a bigger, badder spirit at any moment. Even if you’re not into witchcraft, you should learn methods of spiritual/psychic protection, in order to take better care of your spirits. (Stating this since I usually see spiritual protection being talked about in the context of witchcraft.)

After that there come the psychological needs: first, feeling loved and like you belong. Then, the self esteem.

If you’re skilled at spirit communication, and a demonstrative person, you’ll make them feel loved easily, if you actually like them. If you have trouble showing love, or communicating with spirits, someways to show them they’re loved are:

-Offerings, in every shape or form.

-Daydreaming about them. Thinking about them. Seeing something and go ‘I bet Betsy would like this.’ They can feel it. They know.

-If you have an altar dedicated to them, or part of an altar, keep it clean, neat, re-design it, play with it… It’s a space in your life you’ve dedicated to them. By taking care of it, you’re taking care of them.

Then, the self esteem. Feelings of accomplishment and prestige. For the accomplishment thing, it’s good to ‘assign them tasks’, or ask them for help with certain stuff. X spirit will act as your body guard. Y spirit will help you with your self esteem and pick cute outfits. J spirit will give your food extra flavor and help maintain a clean house. They get to do stuff with you and for you, and get praised in return (you should praise and thank them!), making them feel accomplished.

For the prestige thing… I’m not sure if what I’m thinking of falls in this category. In other pyramids, I’ve seen clothes and shelter listed in the basic needs. And it’s somewhat true. Clothes and shelter makes it so a person doesn’t die of hypothermia, for example. But just really basic sheltering and clothing fulfills that need. IMO, clothes and shelter give them prestige… In their own eyes. Those are things that can elevate their self esteem. A big house filled with toys made my kid spirits really happy. Changing their old, outdated clothes for new, modern clothes (and leather jackets!) makes them feel badass, and good about themselves. Even my cat spirit asked for clothes (and we designed it from scratch and came up with the most disgusting piece of cat clothing ever and we destroyed it and swore to never do that again).

The peak of the pyramid is about self actualization and self fulfillment, including creative endeavors.

Some of my spirit companions, after watching me doing it for so long, got into tabletop roleplaying xD It’s a creative endeavor that makes them really happy. I just leave RPG books on my altar, and Mr.GuardianAngel learns the game and acts as the dungeon master for the other spirits. I wanted to tell this because it’s very endearing ❤ And so you remember the spirits actually go and do things in their own.

But some ways you can directly involve yourself in fulfilling these last needs are:

-Watch informative videos and documentaries with them, on themes of their interest. For some time Mr.Dragon got really curious about how other humans were, and we watched videos of people reading their old diaries for like a week.

-If you write or draw, tell them they can influence your creation, and let them create with you.

-If they feel like they can write/draw on their own, let them, and show interest when they show it to you. My companions tell me about the stories they write/roleplay through tarot cards. I just pull all the cards I feel I need and through reading them I get to know the story.

-If you astral travel, travel with them to locations neither of you know (with safety measures please!) so you can learn together.

To anyone who has read this far, thanks for reading. I hope this is useful for you.

Beginner Spirit Companionship

spirit-adoptions:

There was a lovely suggestion that we make this post, so that’s what we’re doing! This is aimed at people just beginning their spirit work, who don’t have any companions yet, but are looking to get their first one!

Finding a Spirit Companion

So, you’ve read up on spirit companionship, and you’re interested in adopting one. First, make sure you’re prepared for the commitment. How to Take Care of Your Spirit Companion is a good place to start reading, because spirit companions aren’t easy. They aren’t pets, and you will not get instant results with communication and other skills. You have to make sure they’re fed and cared for, and while they can do things on their own, you still have a responsibility to care for them. Some spirits need more assistance than others.

These are living beings with thoughts, emotions, and experiences. They have opinion and likes and dislikes and allergies and all sorts of things, just like, y’know, people. They’re basically people, people that you care for.

So, you’ve decided to take on this commitment. There are blogs, such as this one, that have spirits up for adoption, that you can apply for. There are also custom conjures and various paid services that do the same thing. These services can be found on and off Tumblr. Once you start looking around, they’re not hard to find.

You can venture out on your own and find a spirit companion, but this comes with its own set of issues of protections, spiritual deception, and communication abilities, so personally I recommend going to someone else who is more experience with spirit work to get your first companion.

Getting Your First Companion

While you should be working with a conjurer that take the necessary precautions to keep you safe, you still need to protect yourself. There are some beginner things you need to know, and one of them is protection.

Spirits are not always looking out for your best interests, and while a conjurer should take some responsibility for your safety, spirits can still be dangerous so you need to prepare. There are tons of ways to do this, including but not limited to some sigils, spells, and warding or shielding through energy work. So, if you are doing a custom conjure or get chosen for an adoption, making sure to protect yourself before getting your companion.

Make sure you set up house rules, these are very important. You can alter these as you go along and fit it to the spirits you work with, especially if you decide to expand your spirit family later on, but these can be as complex or as simple as you want or need them to be. It can be “do not harm me, my family, or my pets” or it can be “don’t bother my roommates”, or any variety of rules. It’s important to lay these boundaries so the spirit understands how your relationship is going to work, and they know what things they can and cannot do (e.g. pranks).

Communicating

So you’ve got your companion, and now you’re nervous. What if you can’t talk to them? Well, there are sigils and other magical aids you can use to try and strengthen your communication skills, and there are tons of resources available as well as communication methods that are low-impact  so there are many ways you can learn to communicate.

As with any skill, you have to practice. There are some tips out there to help you, but working on meditation, yes/no questions with a pendulum or other yes/no method, divination exercises, energy work – these are all things you can practice that will help you communicate with your spirit companion.

Also, when doing things like telepathy, you might be worried that the things you’re hearing are just your imagination rather than the spirit. Discernment is a powerful tool, and another skill you should hone in on. If you’re getting the answer too quickly, or always getting the answer you want or expect, then it’s possible you’re projecting your own thoughts and wants onto the questions rather than letting the spirit answer.

Bonding

This is probably one of the most important and fun parts about spirit companionship! There are all sorts of ways you can bond with them. You can go on walks together, go swimming, read, watch TV, just cuddle, honestly the possibilities are endless and you can tailor this to suit your companion’s wants and needs. For example, maybe you can go to the beach if your companion is a mermaid, so they can go swimming in the ocean or you can collect shells for them!

Also, an important reminder is offerings. Spirits do have preferences, and while the conjurer should give you some ideas, it never hurts to ask your companion what they like. With food offerings, for example, there was a siren I spoke to who did not want fish as a food offering. There are carnivorous spirits who need meat, spirits who are vegetarian or vegan, spirits who have allergies, and some who don’t want food offerings at all. The important thing is to discuss what you can offer, what the spirit wants, and how often.

General Resources

We have a tag on this blog for resources, but I figured I would link some stuff here regardless:

If there is anything specific anyone would like more resources on, please let me know! I really love helping you all out in any way I can!

Basic Spirit Work Advice:

ritual-and-chaos:

  • Don’t give out the name that means the most to you, whether that’s your birth name or your nickname.
  • If an entity gives your their full name, don’t give that away to others. Use a nickname or a pseudonym to protect their privacy.
  • If you have any feeling that there’s an unwanted or threatening entity in a space or your home, tell it to go away and show now fear. Do any kind of cleansing exercise that you use. Do not back down. Repeat and increase intensity if it doesn’t stop.
  • Don’t expect to hear voices, see entities, or get any kind of clear messages. It can take years of practice, and sometimes you just can’t. People on tumblr who share their experiences may be embellishing for clarity, and might receive messages in a less clear way than presented.
  • If you have a specific, individualized method of protecting your spiritual area (especially with visualization), don’t share how you’ve made the wards or the specifics of them. It’s just good practice not to show your weaknesses.
  • The “color” of energy does not necessarily denote a specific universal meaning. I’m of the opinion that energy colors are filtered through your own established color system, so make sure you know what you believe – whether colors are linked to different elements, or alignments etc.
  • If you choose to bind an entity to an object, be aware that losing the object might change your relationship with the spirit in some way. I personally advise against binding spirits to things, given that they could easily be damaged or lost, but that’s your choice.
