Underwatched Animated Films I Recommend You See at Least Once in Your Life

theodosiaalstonburr:

mushlord:

EDIT: i didn’t expect this post to get so many notes. for the record, these are just my personal recommendations, not a definitive list of best underrated animation. i also did not include anything made by Disney. I know that they made some movies that didn’t get as much attention as their other hits, but lists of underwatched Disney films are pretty common, so I thought I’d make one of films by studios that aren’t household names.

Angel’s Egg (1985)

This movie is a nearly silent film with painstakingly beautiful frames and environmental details. All I can say is that it is a real piece of art worth watching and can be watched on YouTube here.

image

Les Triplets de Belleville (The Triplets of Belleville) (2005)

An incredibly quirky, strange and humorous French film, also with almost no dialogue. The colors, creative storytelling, and almost caricature-like designs make the Triplets a must-see. The setting and timeframe is left sort of abstract, but it’s a clear transition from last-century rural France to the hustle and bustle of urban America. Lots of homage is paid to cartoons from the 1920s.

Mindgame (2004)

This movie, quite like the title says, blew my mind. It’s also incredibly strange and out-there, but the awkward imagery gives way to real emotion and huge payoff by the end. The colors and animation are delightful, and always tailored to the situation. It is an amazing intersection of an altered state, a love story, a struggle to get home, an existential trip, and an unlikely group of friends. I almost always cry when I watch this. Seriously, can’t stress this enough. There is absolutely nothing like Mindgame.

Le Chat du Rabbin (The Rabbi’s Cat) (2011)

Rabbi’s Cat is a French film based on a French comic by the same name. The comic artist also directed the movie. Honestly, the dialogue  in this is unmatched. Both Cat and Rabbi are witty and have the best banter. The setting is one of the most unique and real-feeling I’ve ever seen a film take place in: a Jewish community in Algeria. It’s wonderful and incredibly charming, could not recommend more.

Tekkonkinkreet (2006)

This movie hits me on a number of levels. I have so much love for the two orphans, Black and White. The story quickly becomes raw and almost difficult, as it touches on a lot of the feelings we see in things like Grave of the Fireflies, but in a much more abstract way and on a much grander scale. Also less sad, but there are very sad parts also. I guess the best way to describe this movie is intense. While there are a lot of sweet, domestic moments, none of the gruesome reality is sugercoated for you.

The visuals are all completely stunning; the art is on another level. Treasure Town is a rich, fantastical environment and the characters flow through it effortlessly, like water. You gotta see this at least once in your life.

image

Chico and Rita (2010)

An American/Spanish romance between an aspiring Cuban piano player and a young black singer. The film has a vibrant and unique visual style, and explores a multitude of music styles and cultural backdrops. The film is touching and sweet, but does not erase the hardships of being a black music star in America or living through the Castro regime.

Wizards (1977)

Ralph Bakshi is notorious for underappreciated gems. Wizards is set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world where magic is real and man has survived the radiation to evolve into fairies, elves, and dwarves. It’s a classic nature vs industry story with Bakshi’s unique spin. My favorite character is Necron 99, the assassin robot turned pacifist. I’ll warn you though, Bakshi films aren’t everyone’s taste (he’s responsible for Fritz the Cat, which against my better judgement I recommend as well).

Wizards was completed during the dark age of animation, and its fascinating to see how Bakshi gets around these limitations to produce something that grossed more than twice its budget.

Memories (1995)

Memories is a three part anthology based on three different manga short stories, Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, and Cannon Fodder. While the entirety of the movie is beautifully animated and worth the watch, the best of these is the first one. It is a mysterious, tragic sci-fi horror short film set in space and worked on by Satoshi Kon (so of course its amazing).

@theotherashley2-3 want to watch one of these?

Snap Magic: Something New

This is a type of spell casting that I have been using, specifically in public places.

Dear closet witches, take note:

This type of spell casting involves sigils. The most difficult part is remembering the sigils well enough to recreate. If you create your own sigils, you can create them on a whim using intuition, but I’d only recommend that only those well-practiced in sigil craft do so.

Here’s how I do it:

Step #1:

Using your dominant hand, draw a circle about the size of your torso. (Once you become well acquainted with the visualization, the amount of actual body movement can become extremely minimal.) Then hold up your non-dominant hand, open palm forward, at your waist/hip and begin visualizing that the circle is maintained and can be moved around by your non-dominant hand.

Step #2:

Using your dominant hand again, draw a sigil within this circle. (While still holding up your non-dominant hand- you should be able to do this while walking around)

-The image above is a sigil that is designed to absorb curses and dispell them. This sigil is the one I use more often than any other.

Step #3:

Once your sigil is complete, begin feeding it the energy and intent necessary to power it through your non-dominant hand, while adding a spin or movement to the sigil with your dominant. Once the motion is strong, and the sigil is adequately charged, begin to walk through the sigil. Maintain the sigil with your controlling hand until it has fully intersected you body. Then snap with your dominant hand and say the magic word. For me, when breaking curses, I use the word “Break”. Make it short, sweet, sharp and powerful; even if it is done mentally.

BOOM!

You have then cast a snap spell.

Once this kind of casting becomes second nature, you can begin to do more complicated spells. Like casting a spell that has three sigil circles, that all float around your body at different angles.

Clarity Spell

areyouanirishwitch:

Moving forward with our intentions requires clarity. Clarity is a combination of focus and understanding. When we know what we want and why we want it, it becomes easier to devise a plan and to move forward with intention. Here is a simple spell that can be performed anytime to aid clarity.

You Will Need

  1. A bowl of water
  2. A pinch of rosemary
  3. A white candle in a safe holder

Preparation
If it is part of your practice, cast a circle. As you sit with your ingredients before you, centre yourself. Ground yourself in the present moment by focusing on your breath, the sensations of your body, and your connection to the earth.

Casting
Place the bowl of water before you and sprinkle the rosemary across the surface. Light the candle and place it behind the bowl so its light reflects in the water.

Gaze into the water and watch the candle flicker along its surface. Empty your mind of thoughts. You may acknowledge a thought as it comes to you, but do not dwell on it. Instead, allow it to pass on, clearing your mind.

Recite the following with intention:

Flickering candle
On water tranquil
End obscurity
Grant me clarity

When finished, extinguish the candle and pour the water and rosemary in your garden or outside.

Notes
Rosemary: associated with the sun and fire; it enhances mental prowess
White candle: divination and healing

Safe Space Spell for one of our commission patrons from The Witchy Stuff Patreon

You will need: Anise or  Lavender incense  stick and 3 candles.
Go to the room you want to keep as a safe place. Put the candles infront of you (its better to sit down in the ground and have them near you).
Light up the candles from left to right.  Then light up the incense stick.
Close your eyes and think about all the things that make you calm and feel free.  When you are relaxed and in complete silence start chanting words that will bond the emotion you want to give to the place with the physical room.
The words can be anything you want that echo what you feel but you can also use the ones we wrote :

This place is safe from all harm
Peace of mind will stay around
and welcome any friendly smile

My magic soul will stay intact

Once you finish the chant, stay in silence until you feel you are ready and open your eyes. Blow off the candles and let the incense stick in a place where it can fill the room with scent until it finishes.

9 Witchy Self Care Tips

tea-and-witchcraft:

  • Make a personal sigil and keep it on you. It can be a sigil for self love, motivation or anything along those lines. I like to draw a sigil on my wrist, shoulder or above my knee.
  • Make a chant or affirmation to make you feel good about yourself. Also make a playlist of possitive and affirming songs and put it on shuffle.
  • Make your own personal blend of herbal tea to soothe you in times of need. Use your favorite herbs and spices.
  • Adopt a plant, something very easy and low maintenance, to boost your self esteem and to have someone to talk to. This could be an easy succulent or cactus.
  • Enchanted jewelry or pieces of clothing. Extra point for making your own jewelry or clothing.
  • Make small rituals, like a morning ritual where you stretch, meditate, make tea etc.
  • Meditate. Take time to sit still and breath, with or without music.
  • Cleanse your space, both physically and mentally. Whenever you find the time and the energy try to clean your room / house of clutter and maybe smoke cleanse it.
  • Cleanse your mind. Write down everything that bothers you, worries you or just makes you sad. You can keep the paper somewhere safe or burn it to get rid of the bad energy, if it makes you feel better. Just be careful with fire!

Recovering past lives:

welcome-the-ghosts:

Close your eyes.

You are in a long hallway. There are thousands of doors to your left and right. Between each door is a marble pillar, elegant and strong. The walls are a deeper shade of your favorite colour. Torches dimly light your path. A long thin carpet lines the floor, straight. Each door is a different design and shape. Open the door to your left. It will take you to a memory. Where are you? WHO are you? Is anyone with you? There is nothing you can do here, this is a memory and it will play out the same each time. Don’t try to force it, let it play out. You can leave by turning around. The same door you entered from will be behind you. No matter where you go, the door out will always be behind you. You will enter back into the hall way. Good luck.

*note: if you encounter a mirror that does not reflect your appearance, step through it

*note-note: If you encounter anyone else walking into and out of doors that you didn’t willing invite in, close and lock all the doors. There should be a key to the doors in your pocket. Proceed to the very last door, it is not marked by any pillars. This door leads nowhere. You control everything in this hallway, the hall is yours. Open the last door and let out the wolves.

*note-note-note: The doors farther down the hall are older. The last door (if you ever reach it) is your first life.
