Talking to Trees: A Nature Spirit Tutorial
Hey everybody! Buddhist mystic and energy worker, Darce, here with a little tutorial on chatting with trees. This tutorial is focused on tree spirits, but the same principles can be applied to almost any variety of nature spirits you might encounter. After reading othersâ posts and practicing some nature spirit communication at home, I wanted to give it a go in the woods on my parentsâ property while I visited them this weekend.Â
I had some wonderful experiences, and wanted to share with you all my advice for doing this if anyone needs help getting started! Feel free to DM me if you have questions or share any tips youâve picked up with nature spirit communication đ
Preparation:
- You definitely should have done some work on developing your intuition/inner-wisdom/psychic abilities (whatever your name is for this skill set) first or trying to communicate with nature spirits in the forest will be difficult. The same skills you need to talk to nature spirits are related to the same type of skills used for discerning meanings during divination, for intuitively selecting which of three potential herbs to use for a potion, or for talking to any other type of spirit guides or companions. Itâs about tapping into your intuition and being able to have confidence in it. Make sure you feel comfortable with this on a basic level first!
- Similar to the astral, there are many spirits – some peaceful and some not so well-intentioned – living in and traversing areas of nature, especially where thereâs a dense population of trees and underbrush. Just to be safe, I put up wards before going into the woods. If you happen to run into any trickster spirits, youâll be safer – and itâs much better to be safe than sorry! (I let the wards down a little when I encounter a spirit I feel safe around while chatting.)
- If you have sodalite and/or blue lace agate, those are good crystals to help with opening the channels of communication. So if you happen to have either crystal, bring them with you and anything else that helps you with spirit communication in general.
- Also if possible, bring an offering for whomever you end up talking to. The offering can be as small and simple as some water to pour over treesâ roots, or whatever you think a tree in your area might appreciate as a little gift! Itâs the gesture that matters most.
Interaction:
- When I approach a tree before I do anything I try to look at it and tune into its energy. Does it have a nurturing vibe? Angry? Quiet? Welcoming? Interested? Tired? Timid? Young and youthful? Old and wise? Try to see if you can feel out a little bit of this tree – which will give you a sense if to talk or not.
- If you get decent vibes, then I ask in my head or out loud, âMay I speak with you?â and usually get an intuitive sense of yes/no usually clearly right away. If itâs anything less than a clear yes, then I donât approach any further and respectful try another tree.
- If I get a yes, Iâll put my hand on the trunk. If you have the crystals, you can put them between your hand and the bark and channel their energies to increase your connection. Then I just continue the conversation. Sometimes there are pauses filled with silence. Sometimes the spiritâs answers are feelings, not words. I usually get a sense of the treeâs personality the more I talk to them, and the more I talk to surrounding trees – other conversations with other trees will come up sometimes bc the trees nearer each other are very aware of each other.
- Make sure you donât start asking anything from these spirits until youâve established a good relationship first – or unless you are able to provide something equally valuable to the spirit in return. I recently asked a tree spirit to help me with a spell, and she agreed but asked that I provide her some positive energy later. You can still give offerings from afar – it all really depends on what the spirit would like. Donât ever assume what they do or donât want with regards to anything. Just ask and youâll find out (:
Conclusion:
Afterward, I thank the tree and ask if they want the offering I have. Some do, some donât, some donât care either way. If the answer is yes, I give the offering and say goodbye for now.
Everyoneâs experience is different, but hopefully this short tutorial will give you some useful tips to work with. I must thank @astralcaw for showing me their posts on tree conversations! It inspired me and helped me to do the same.Â
In summary, the key is to 1) be as respectful to the spirits as possible, and 2) trust your gut and your feelings about what you feel the tree is saying – your ability to get this more accurate will increase over time, but wonât work if you arenât confident in yourself!

- âwe are in the timeline that god abandonedâ whenever iâm mildly inconvenienced
- âcanât you see that your fighting is tearing this family apart?â whenever two or more coworkers are arguing

- âtime to go back to prison!â when putting animals back in their cages

- âwhat are they gonna do, fire me?â
9 Practical Tips for New Witches
1. Â Write down a list
of your current passions, interests, goals, and beliefs. Knowing
this information can help you to develop your witchcraft and to make it more
personal. Â Itâs important to feel a deep
connection to your own style of craft, so it is incredibly helpful to
incorporate the things that you love in life.
While itâs a good idea to think of and list serious things, itâs 100%
okay if your list mostly contains entries like âshiny things, stuff that smells
good, My Chemical Romanceâ; you should definitely add entries like that,
because that right there still tells you that youâll probably enjoy using reflective
objects, aromatherapy, and music in your witchcraft. Â The entries on your list can help you to
creatively think of ways to make your magick yours, while still helping you to identify any pre-existing styles
and paths of witchcraft that incorporate elements of your list.2. Â Keep a regular
journal, along with any magick journals that you might have. Â Keep track of your health, your dreams, your
moods, your habits, your life in general.
When you are first starting out, it can be difficult to automatically
see how magick affects you. Â By keeping a
mundane, regular journal, youâre better able to reference past events against
your magick journals, to see if any changes or unusual entries (negative or positive) occurred at the same time
as something witchcraft-related.3. Â Sign up for as many
guided nature walks and talks as you can. Â Itâs
always a good idea to know the nature around you, especially if youâre a witch. Guided walks and talks can give you
first-hand experience when it comes to identifying plants, animals, and other
things that you can find in your area.
If it is allowed, remember to bring along a camera and / or a notebook
so that you can record and reference your new knowledge afterwards.4. Â Take an interest in
cooking. Â This is an especially good tip
for any witches that are looking to hide their witchcraft. Â Learning to cook is a life skill, and doesnât
tend to draw unwanted attention. Â The
food, herbs, and spices that you use all have their own magickal
correspondences and associations, so it really comes down to figuring out some
ingredients that match your magickâs intent, and then finding an actual recipe that
calls for those ingredients. Â5. Â Start your own
garden, no matter how small.
Seeds can be affordable purchased at most stores with gardening centers,
and you can grow some herbs in a leftover tin can. Â Really, you donât need a lot of space or cash
to be able to start some sort of garden, whether indoors or outdoors. Â Just make sure that wherever you are
planting, you have permission to plant there!6. Â Develop your DIY skills. Â Crafting, sewing,
upcycling â spend some time learning about the âDo It Yourselfâ culture. Â Aside from being an excellent way to learn
how to create your own tools and witchy stuff, a lot of the skills that you
will learn can be incorporated into your spells. Â So can any supplies that you have on hand for
regular arts and crafts, for that matter.
And when you get right down to it, nobody has to know that your handmade
lavender lip-balm is actually an enchanted item and a dual healing / beauty
spell. Â Making anything by hand helps to
give it power, and can be another great way to practice witchcraft
under-the-radar; unless you literally announce that your felt-and-an-old-sock
plushie is actually a poppet, how can anybody know?7. Â Find places to
source your witchy ingredients and supplies.
Look up and scout out any local:o Â
Book storeso Â
Box stores (like Walmart, Target)o Â
Craft storeso Â
Dollar storeso Â
Farm standso  Farmerâs markets
o Â
Flea marketso Â
Garden stores / Nurserieso Â
Librarieso Â
Hiking trailso Â
Metaphysical / New Age storeso Â
Rockhounding locationso Â
Tea / herb storeso Â
Thrift storeso Â
Rock / crystal / mineral shops8. Â Build a non-fiction
library. Â Cookbooks, how-to books, field
guides, books that teach you skills.
History books, scientific magazines and journals, textbooks on any
topic. Â Read about first-hand accounts,
theories and practices, facts and trivia.
Read educational books meant for kids, and encyclopedias meant for
months of study. Â Donât be afraid to
check your material against a different source, either. Â Finding multiple sources citing a piece of
knowledge is a good habit to develop, especially
if your knowledge deals with the safety or danger of anything. Â Whether it was posted online or published in
a book, make sure that the authorâs information is accurate!9. Â Collect and upcycle
bottles, jars, tins, and other storage. Â Itâs a running joke
here on Tumbler: âwitches love jarsâ.
But wow is it an accurate
joke. Â There have been a couple of times
that Iâve come home with new loose supplies like shells or acorns, only to
stand there and realize that literally all of my other storage is taken and
that unless I want to stick them in a plastic bag, I have to temporarily store
them by taking the last few Piroutte cookies out of the tin and giving it a
quick cleaning (and now you know the exact moment that I thought of posting about this tip! lol).  Practicing witchcraft can
be a really quick way to turn into a self-powered miniature recycling plant; itâs
a lot cheaper to clean that jelly jar than it is to go buy an actual Mason jar,
and itâs usually better for the environment as well ^_^Not all of these are for everyone, but I like a lot of them.

đŽ28 Day Witchy ChallengeđŽ
Hi lovelies! I hope you are all having a beautiful day! I have decided to make a 28 Day Witchy Challenge Post. This can be started at the beginning of the month or at any time. Itâs whatever you prefer.
This is geared towards all witches, new and old. This challenge is focused on taking care of you and your witchy self. I am starting off September with challenge one. Iâd love to see or know if y’all do it!!
đŽ DAY 1 – Take time out of your day to think about, write about, or draw what your witchy self looks like. What they are into. Their favorite witchy activity. Any details you can possibly think of.
đŽDAY 2 – Take the day to meditate. It can be about anything or nothing at all. Let your mind wonder and do itâs thing. Journal about it and let things come to you.
đŽDAY 3 – BUY SOMETHING WITCHY! This challenge is all about self-care for you and your witchy self, so it can be as simple as spending a dollar at the dollar store or buying something elaborate online. If there is no way you can buy something, try to find something. For example, go to the woods/Park and try to find a mushroom for an offering.
đŽDAY 4 – Piggy backing off of day 3, MAKE SOMETHING JUST FOR YOU AND YOUR CRAFT. Like all of these days, it can be something big or small. You can make a set of runes or maybe make yourself a picture for your alter. Just make it for YOU!
đŽDAY 5 – Watch or listen to something witchy. Charmed, Practical Magic, listen to some witchy music, anything!
đŽ DAY 6 – Spend some time in nature! Whether it is sitting on your lawn or taking a hike, or even a walk through the park, just take time to appreciate nature and Mother Earth and all she had given us.
đŽDAY 7 – Let an entire candle burn. I know this may sounds silly to some of you, but I am the type of person that struggles with this (unless doing a specific spell). So, just sit with your candle and watch it burn. Feel free to multitask while doing this. Just try to focus on it now and again. It can be a birthday candle or a very large candle, whatever works for you.
đŽDAY 8 – Make a special cup of tea. If youâre not a tea drinker, try a different kind or hot coco or coffee. When making, focus in your intent. When drinking, focus on all the different flavors you taste and sensations you feel.
đŽDAY 9 – Journal about the elements and what they mean to you.
đŽDAY 10 – Make a list of new worst things you can try. It can be anything like talking more walks or a new spell!
đŽ DAY 11 – Journal about your deities/higher power. What they mean to you. If you donât have any, then try to journal about the energies around you. What you feel and the power.
đŽ DAY 12 – Piggy backing off of day 12, write down/find a new way you can honor your deities or energies that you journaled about. And if itâs possible, do it! It can be anything from a leaf you found to an elaborate meal. It can be simply praying.
đŽDAY 13 – BATH OR SHOWER MAGIC! This is pretty self-explanatory, but try to just take some time and take a magical bath or shower. It doesnât have to be elaborate, or it can! Try to just focus your intent and maybe try a shower or bath meditation. There are a ton of different things here on Tumblr, so get creative!
đŽDAY 14 – Spell Jar!! There are a TON of spell jars on Tumblr and all over the internet. You can use those or make your own! They are very easy and great if youâre low on spoons!
đŽDAY 15 – Cook! If you arenât able to cook due to physical reasons, or even lack of time, then try to eat something special. Regardless, cook or at least eat something that inspires you or harnesses your intent.
đŽDAY 16 – PRAYER! This is pretty self-explanatory, but try to honor and show your intent. Ask even, for guidance, hope, strength, whatever!
đŽDAY 17 – Sky watching! You can watch the Moon and stars or just the clouds go by.
đŽDAY 18 – Journal about what magick means to you. Go into as much detail as possible.
đŽDAY 19 – SIGILS! Make your own sigil! Focus your intent and be creative! If there is no way you can come up with your own, then feel free to use one from the internet.
đŽDAY 20 – Alter time!!! Try to redecorate your alter! If you are in the broom closet, then maybe draw one!
đŽDAY 21 – Journal about ways you can, from now on, nurture yourself. Whether itâs teas, baths, putting on makeup, whatever! Make lists or just woke about the things you want to do!
đŽDAY 22 – Worry Stone! You can find one or make one or but one, itâs totally up to you! Which brings us tooooooooooooâŚâŚ
đŽDAY 23 – Cleanse and charge your items!! There are umpteen different ways you can cleanse and charge your items, just pick one! Please make sure that however you cleanse and charge your items, it is safe for them.
đŽDAY 24 – PLANTS! Take care of your plants, harvest a plant, buy a plant, even take some time to talk with your plants!
đŽDAY 25 – SCAVENGER HUNT! No, not literally. But, go find something that nature has given you. A mushroom, a leaf, anything! Place it on your alter and honor it! By honoring it, you honor Mother Nature and all that she has created. Including you!
đŽDAY 26 – Do a glamour!! This can be anything from enchanting your chapstick to make you feel loved or carrying a self-love charm bag. Get creative with it! Try to make your intent focus on love from yourself or self-confidence!
đŽDAY 27 -MAKE YOUR OWN SPELL! Literally, just have fun with this. Use your alter, use your journal entries and the internet and books! Get creative! Focus your intent and be specific! It can be low spoons or high spoons. Whatever works for you!
đŽDAY 28 – MEDITATE! Meditate about the past 28 days and all the work youâve done! Think and focus on your craft and all the self-care you have worked for!
I hope y’all enjoy this! Please let me know if you do it! Iâd love to hear y’allâs thoughts! Feel free to edit this however you want! Make it work for you! I hope all you lovelies are have a beautiful day/night! đ

Gentle witch little things
Simple things you can do to bring more love and positivity into the world:
- enchant the bus or train youâre on, so that everybody has a pleasant day or a safe travel home
- paint protective sigils in the misty windows of buses or shops when it rains, and leave words of encouragement and praise on public bathroomsâ mirrors
- bless passing ambulances and firefighter trucks with speed and safety for their patients/destination
- wear an enchanted lipstick/gloss for your smile to brighten the day of everybody you meet
- enchant your spare change so that it gives luck to the beggars you donate it to; they need it, donât they?
- actually, just enchant your money, so that retail and low-wage workers can have a better day when they serve you
- leave blessed acorns and harmless trinkets in various places like buses or waiting rooms; give other people something to wonder about and make their day, and kids an item to roll in their hands mindlessly
- bless food and leave it for stray animals; let birds be messangers of hope and miraclous event for everybody that sees them
- whisper encouragement to trees and grass you pass by; let them know someone cares, someone sees their beauty, and awaits their bloom
- smile at children and pets; provide them with the positive energy that the world is trying to kill in them
- leave motivational notes, praise and silly drawings charged with love and hope on post-it notes as you go; they can brighten the day of those that find them
– Write safety sigils on the bottom of your shoes/tuck sigil papers into them so as you walk you wonât get lost and every step will make those around you safer and happier.
– With cement/driveway chalk, write sigils on street corners and at parks for litter prevention and safety at night.Great additions!
I LOVE this post! Such great ideas.
– Iâd also like to add blessing various flowers, especially ones that bees and butterflies are known to like.
– Enchating your money also for tips with the intent that they get more tips throughout the day for their service.
– Writing safety/protection sigils on the doors or walls of public restrooms (especially in high crime areas such as my own where women are often victimized in.)
– Sprinkling eggshell powder for plants in public areas to give them a boost (i donât want to mess with otherâs personal plants without permission.)
– Blessing all gifts I give to people with positive energy that goes beyond the gift itself.
Samhain is comiiiiiinggggg and iâm one excited witch!
Samhain (pronounced âsow-inâ) is drawing very near, and as its my favorite holiday i canât seem to make enough posts about it. It begins at midnight on October 31st, and celebrations often go on until November 2nd. It is the witches new year!Â
Some historic traditions:
Just like at Beltane, bonfires are lit in high places on Samhain, like at hilltops, and around them rituals would take place. During this community ritual, people would take flames from the bonfire and use them to relight the hearths of their homes. They did this to bind the community together. They would also use these fires for divination in their rituals.Â
In Gaelic regions, during household festivities many rituals that took place were intended to divine the future of everyone there, for example apple bobbing. (If you donât already know this, Apples are strongly associated with ancestors and the other world.) The first to bite into an apple was the next allowed to marry!
As you most likely have heard a zillion times, The veil between our world and the next is thinner on Samhain. This is true, Samhain is  a liminal time, and that means the barriers separating the world of the living and the dead and other spirits can be crossed more easily than at any other point in the year. It is said that entities called âAos Siâ can slip from their world into ours, through a summoning or their own will. During Samhain it is traditional to leave libations for any aos si that have come into our realm. This is usually in the form of food & drink, like a plate of soul cakes, a small portion of a meal and a cup of wine. Due to this thin veil, it is a time for honoring those who have passed. It is widely believed spirits of loved ones will come and visit their former homes and seek hospitality from those within. Places should always be set for loved ones who have passed at the table on Samhain. I even set a place for a spirit I feel in my home. People will often hold a âdumb supperâ. It is a silent meal during which you set a place for visiting spirits, and invite them to join you.
Traditional Samhain ActivitiesÂ
Bobbing for Apples- The fewer tries it took to catch an apple, the sooner youâd fall in love or marry. If the apple was crisp and crunchy, the participant would have a happy marriage. If it was soft or rotten, it was bad news for your love life future.
Peeling the Apple– You peel one long strip of skin from an apple and then throw the peel over your shoulder. Whatever letter the peel resembles is said to be the first letter of your soulmates name.
Hazelnut Divination- Couples would throw hazelnuts into a fire, and if it burned it predicted a long and happy relationship, and if it cracked open it showed a rocky road ahead.
Samhain Correspondences

I would like to add a note to be cautious on Samhain. If you have a black pet please keep it inside, lots of sick people will harm these animals on this night. Please be careful with spirit work as well, the veil is very thin and as you would normally with spirit work protect yourself, but x10 on samhain. Carry a gris-gris, Create your circles, Keep blessed salt around, Make sure you end conversations with the Ouija and it wonât hurt to keep a silver coin on it, like they say it keeps evil spirits from coming through. Â Treat spirits, creatures and humans around you with respect.Â
Blessed be, I hope everyone enjoys Samhain!! Note your favorite samhain activities and traditions, and please note any traditions passed down to you!Â
